The RLL elementary
language program is carefully designed to be taken in sequence in
order to achieve an ideal learning environment for maximum comprehension.
By taking a language course at another university, you risk returning
ill-prepared for the next course in the U-M sequence. Other universities
may use different methodologies and textbooks, and cover different
material than the U-M equivalent course.
It is to your advantage to complete the language requirement at
U-M, where consistency and continuity will provide a smoother learning
experience. Therefore, once you have begun degree enrollment
at U-M, LSA requires that you complete the sequence in residence,
either on the U-M main campus or on a U-M study-abroad program designated
to fit in the sequence.

Students Transferring
to U-M
If you haven't fulfilled the LSA
Language Requirement when transferring to U-M from another college
or university, you will need to take the Language
Placement Test to ensure you are placed at a level appropriate
to your ability.
Only your placement test
score, and not language coursework completed at your previous school,
will determine your placement within the U-M language sequence.
You may receive credit for previous language coursework completed
at another school, but the placement test will ensure that your
abilities will match the level of instruction here at U-M.
