Juli Highfill has been promoted to professor of Spanish. Prof Highfill has recently completed a book manuscript, Modernism and Its Merchandise: The Spanish Avant-Garde and Material Culture, 1918-1936. Her research interests include 19th and 20th century literature; the Spanish and Argentine historic avant-gardes; material and visual culture; early cinema in Spain; literary and cultural theory.
Paulina Alberto has been promoted to associate professor of Spanish. She shares a joint appointment in the Department of History. Her most recent book is Terms of Inclusion: Black Intellectuals in Twentieth-Century Brazil (University of North Carolina Press, 2011). Her research interests include modern Latin American history and historiography; Brazil; ideologies of race, nation, and citizenship; intellectual/cultural history; Afro-Latin America/diaspora.
Daniel Noemí Voionmaa has been promoted to associate professor of Spanish. He is currently working on a project that combines critical reception of literary texts and different political views during and after the dictatorship in Chile. His research interests include Latin American culture and politics; 20th and 21st centuries; film; social realism; avant-garde; post-boom; and literary theory.
