Once you have been selected and admitted to a study program abroad, the next step is to choose your courses and meet with a RLL advisor.

Meeting with a RLL advisor
Meeting with a concentration advisor is a required step in the study-abroad process. Scheduling an appointment with a RLL advisor before your study-abroad program for course pre-approval will help to ensure that you will receive concentration/minor credits at the level you need. Be sure to bring the following with you:

  • Program details
Have information about where you are going, how long you will be there and what university is sponsoring your program.
  • Course descriptions
Bring a list of titles and descriptions of the courses available on the program you've selected. The RLL advisor's recommendations can only be as detailed as the materials you bring. Keep in mind that your RLL advisor cannot guarantee in advance that the courses you take abroad will count toward your concentration or minor requirements. This can only be verified when you return because there are typically not enough details available prior to your trip to determine what level of instruction is given.

Please call (734) 764-5344 or visit the RLL Main Office in 4108 Modern Languages Building to schedule an appointment (sorry, appointments cannot be made via e-mail). Keep in mind that we may not offer advising appointments during the spring and summer half-terms, as most faculty are on leave at that time.

Keep in mind
It is important to be aware of the course requirements of your concentration or minor and choose courses accordingly. Before you make your selections, consider how many upper-level courses you have already taken and how many you will still need.

Credits earned on non-UM programs toward a UM degree are considered transfer credits. Please be aware that certain procedures must be followed, which are explained on the following LS&A page: How To Get Credit for Courses Taken at Another College.

To earn credit for coursework on a non-UM study-abroad program, you must complete the Statement of Intent To Study Abroad (SISA) form and submit it to the Office of International Programs (G513 Michigan Union). After you return from abroad, it is your responsibility to make sure that the university you attended sends an official transcript to the Undergraduate Admissions Office.
