Course selection, whether for a UM or non-UM study abroad program, should be discussed with an RLL advisor BEFORE a student makes a final decision on their course selection. To make an advising appointment, please call the RLL Main Office 764.5344.
Courses on any subject taught entirely in Italian can count toward the Italian concentration.
This includes language courses that are at a demonstrably higher level than 232. One course
taught in English on an Italian subject can count for cognate credit.
Students interested in gaining fluency while abroad are encouraged to avoid "island" programs
such as UM's program in Sesto Fiorentino (Florence). Island programs are not attached to an
Italian university, and most courses are taught in English.
Strongly recommended for fluency is UM's program in Padua. It is an immersion program all courses are taught in Italian. Also recommended are the courses of study at Italy's universities for foreigners in Perugia and Siena,
which are offered year-round.
