This course provides the opportunity to become acquainted with Korea and Korean civilization through a study of the history, thought, religion, and literature. Each lecture will take the themes in Korean Civilization, with emphasis on the history and culture from pre-historic to modern times. We will consider the unique shape of Korean civilization as it has been impacted by its larger neighbors: China, in traditional times, and Japan, in the twentieth century. Along the way, we will examine literature materials illustrative of Korean elite values, popular religion and family structure. The course will consist of four parts: Korean history; thought and religion; literature; contemporary society.
