registering for your first term
REGISTRATION

For many students, the highlight of orientation is registering for Fall courses. On the day before you are scheduled to register you will attend an afternoon workshop that will assist you in navigating the online resources that you will use to learn about and register for LS&A courses.

Before you register, it is important to take full advantage of the LS&A Online Course Guide to learn more about the courses you would like to take. You should make a long list of these courses, and on the last day of orientation, you and your advisor will discuss your reasons for choosing particular courses. At this time, you may also want to discuss campus resources (e.g. Science Learning Center study groups or Sweetland Writing Center tutors) that will assist you throughout the term with these courses.

You should then use WolverineAccess to search for the times, location, and availability of the courses that you have chosen. Once you have gathered all the relevant information and have been authorized to register, you will register for the Term using WolverineAccess. You should make it a habit to print your class schedule for your records after registering or making changes to your schedule. Once you have been authorized to register, it is easy to make changes by using WolverineAccess from any web browser.

Academic Peer Advisors and Academic Advisors will be on hand to assist you with this process. The following resources are your keys to registration at the University of Michigan.

Student Academic Affairs Website
www.lsa.umich.edu/~saa

The Student Academic Affairs website contains a wealth of information that you will need throughout your career in LS&A, including LS&A policies and procedures, advisor contact information, and the LS&A Online Course Guide. The SAA website also contains LS&A course description archives, online versions of the Parent and First-Year Handbooks, and much, much more.

LS&A Online Course Guide
www.lsa.umich.edu/~saa/publications/courseguide/cg.html

A main feature of the SAA website, the LS&A Online Course Guide, is an invaluable resource for finding out about the courses you'd like to register for. The Online Course Guide contains the most accurate and up-to-date information about course offerings in LS&A. Use it to browse course offerings and descriptions in every LS&A department. Courses are also listed according to requirements they fulfill (e.g. Distribution, Introductory Composition & Upper-Level Writing, Language, R&E, and QR). Refer to the Online Course Guide for up-to-date lists of open courses and waitlisting procedures for each class. The Online Course Guide also contains links to course descriptions offerred in other schools on campus.

Time Schedule
www.umich.edu/~regoff

The Registrar's Office publishes an online Time Schedule, where you can find course titles, times and locations for all courses taught at UM. This is useful once you know exactly which classes you want to take. It does not, however, contain course descriptions or information on course availability. Each term, a printed time schedule is also available.

WolverineAccess
wolverineaccess.umich.edu

Your last stop in the registration process, WolverineAccess is a web-based tool that allows you to register for classes online. WolverineAccess contains information about class times and locations and the most up-to-date enrollment figures for all classes. Outside of registration, you will also use WolverineAccess to view and update personal information and to access your academic transcript.

FAQregistration

Q: What if I don't get into any of the courses I really want?

A: You should be able to get into courses necessary to begin sequences you may need, such as language, mathematics, and chemistry. The section meeting time may not be the hour you would prefer, but generally, all students who need these courses are able to get into them. However, it is true that popular courses tend to close early; if you restrict your options only to these classes, you are likely to be disappointed. Keep in mind that there are always excellent courses open that are suitable for first-year students and can help meet area distribution or other requirements.

Also, you are free to visit any closed courses at the beginning of the term and talk with the professor about the possibility of getting an override into the course.

Q: What is the Time Schedule and when is it available?

A: The UM Time Schedule provides a listing of all course offerings for a given term, including all LS&A courses. It also contains Registration and Drop/Add Information, Fee Regulations, and an Examination Schedule.

A final edition of the Fall Term Time Schedule is published and distributed in the last week of August. The Winter Term Time Schedule is distributed in mid-November. In mid-March, two Time Schedules are distributed, one for the Fall Term and the other for the Spring, Spring-Summer, and Summer Terms. The Time Schedule may also be obtained online several weeks prior to the distribution of printed copies at: http://www.umich.edu?~regoff/timesched/
