A letter from the Director, Academic Advising Center
Greetings and welcome to the University of Michigan. Since
my own arrival at U-M, I continue to be impressed by the breadth
of opportunities offered by the College of Literature, Science,
and the Arts. You will find a varied curriculum accompanied by
out-of-class experiences to meet your personal goals. Additionally,
there are ample non-academic options to enhance your undergraduate
years. To guide you through these exciting, and occasionally stressful
times, the LS&A Academic Advising Center provides information
and assistance.
During Orientation you will have a small group discussion led
by your assigned first-year advisor. This session will be followed
by two individual one-on-one sessions with your advisor. During
these times your advisor will begin to get acquainted with you
and will help you find the appropriate set of courses to start
your college experience.
Most students at U-M face adjustments the first year. There
may be new academic expectations here which are greater than you
have experienced in the past. We suggest that you evaluate carefully
(and early) the level of performance your instructors anticipate.
Read over the syllabus in each course and compare notes with fellow
students. If you have any questions or concerns, please discuss
them promptly with your advisor.
Naturally you will be adjusting outside the classroom as well.
There are many rules and complex procedures which you will master
in making your way through the system at U-M. In this first term,
for example, you might consider a lighter academic load. Again,
please use the expertise of your advisor in assuring a successful
transition.
We further recommend that you see your advisor at least once
a term. Advisors can help you understand academic policies and
procedures as well as help you progress
with purpose toward a degree. They are knowledgeable resources
to turn to if you are having difficulty in any class. Perhaps
most importantly, advisors can be a valuable sounding board for
you to test your ideas about what you want to do with your education.
In order to make the most of your educational experience at
Michigan you need to take the initiative. Seek out the professors,
the classes, and the advisors that best meet your needs.
All of us in the Academic Advising Center wish you the best
during your undergraduate years and look forward to the privilege
of working with you.
