Visa Information

Please note: International students should ALWAYS consult the International Center at the University of Michigan regarding immigration issues.

Maintaining Legal F1 Status

To maintain legal F1 status, student must:

  • Attend the school whose I20 was used to gain admission to the U.S. or have completed the transfer process through International Center
  • Have a valid I20 (unexpired)
  • Have a valid passport
  • Attend school fulltime* for at least the full academic year Undergraduates: 12 hours per term Graduates: 8 hours (or as defined by school) or 6 hours with a RA or GSI
  • Not accept unauthorized employment: F1 students are allowed to work up to 20 hour per week on campus while maintaining status; authorization needed for any offcampus employment.
  • Transfer schools, change program, extend program with INS prescribed procedures (check with the International Center)

Maintaining Legal J1 Status

To maintain legal J1 student status, student must:

  • Have a valid W66 (unexpired)
  • Have a valid passport
  • Attend school fulltime* for at least the full academic year Undergraduates: 12 hours per term Graduates: 8 hours (or as defined by school) or 6 hours with a RA or GSI
  • Not accept unauthorized employment. J1 student must obtain authorization for any employment. This authorization is given by the exchange visitor program sponsor. Check with the International Center for detail.
  • Maintain required health insurance coverage

* Students may be less than fulltime during their last term or if they have documented medical or academic reasons.
