Visa Information
Please note: International students should
ALWAYS consult the International Center at the University of Michigan regarding immigration
issues.
MAINTAINING LEGAL F1 STATUS
To maintain legal F1 status, student
must:
- Attend the school whose I20 was used
to gain admission to the U.S. or have completed the transfer
process through International Center
- Have a valid I20 (unexpired)
- Have a valid passport
- Attend school fulltime for the full
academic year Undergraduates: 12 hours per term Graduates: 8
hours (or as defined by school) or 6 hours with a RA or GSI
- Not accept unauthorized employment:
F1 students are allowed to work up to 20 hour per week on campus
while maintaining status; authorization needed for any offcampus
employment.
- Transfer schools, change program, extend
program with INS prescribed procedures (check with the International
Center)
MAINTAINING LEGAL J1 STATUS
To maintain legal J1 student status,
student must:
- Have a valid IAP-66 (unexpired)
- Have a valid passport
- Attend school fulltime for the full
academic year Undergradu
ates: 12 hours per term Graduates: 8 hours (or as defined by
school) or 6 hours with a RA or GSI
- Not accept unauthorized employment.
J1 student must obtain authorization for any employment. This
authorization is given by the exchange visitor program sponsor.
Check with the International Center for details.
- Maintain required health insurance coverage
