about the College
OVERVIEW

The College of Literature, Science, & the Arts at the University of Michigan offers all the strengths of a liberal arts education to a very selective group of students. Our departments, programs, and centers offer disciplinary studies throughout the traditional divisions of the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, but recent years bear witness to the ever increasing opportunities in interdisciplinary studies. Often the connections are drawn between the humanities and social sciences or between the social and natural sciences, but the University's new life sciences initiative, for example, has led already to the creation of a course combining humanities and natural science learning.

While students take courses from departments spread across the humanities, social sciences, and natural science, there are increasing opportunities to take courses that transcend disciplinary boundaries. For example, courses developed by the University's new Life Sciences Initiative ask students to study biology and the other life sciences within an interdisciplinary context.

Of course LS&A students must fulfill specific requirements on the way toward earning their undergraduate degree, but the choices offered for meeting any one of these are many. There are, for example, some half dozen courses available that meet the Introductory Composition requirement, and there are more than two hundred courses that carry Humanities (HU) distribution credit for this minimum two-course requirement for students working toward AB (Bachelor of Arts) and BS (Bachelor of Science) degrees.

Choices. Opportunities. Possibilities. It can all be a little overwhelming, for students and parents alike. And in order to help you understand LS&A and the ways you best may help your student navigate their individual journeys while enrolled in the College, we have assembled this handbook. We hope it gives you a good introduction to academics in LS&A and answers many of the questions on your mind.

With your understanding of LS&A and support of your students, you can assist the College in its endeavors, through a challenging liberal arts experience, to help your students gain strong communication, analytical, interpersonal, and leadership skills needed for success in our rapidly changing world and for giving it necessary leadership and vision.

Our best wishes to you and your student!
