Upper-Level Writing Requirement
All students in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, School of Music, and School of Natural Resources and Environment must satisfy the Upper-Level Writing Requirement (ULWR) before graduating. This writing requirement is generally completed within the student's concentration and aims to help students recognize and master the writing conventions of their chosen discipline, so that, upon graduation, they are able to understand and communicate effectively the central concepts, approaches, and materials of their discipline.
Once a student has satisfied the First-Year Writing Requirement and feels ready for advanced writing, he/she should elect an approved Advanced Writing in the Disciplines course to satisfy the Upper-Level Writing Requirement (ULWR). Students must also select the course for the writing requirement on Wolverine Access. At the end of the term, the course instructor will be asked to provide a ULWR grade of satisfactory, unsatisfactory, or incomplete for all students who selected the course for ULWR. Satisfactory grades should only be given to thsoe ULWR-selected students who receied a course grade of C- or better.
Each term the Sweetland Writing Center provides a list of approved Advanced Writing in the Disciplines courses. A course approved to meet the Upper-Level Writing Requirement one term is not necessarily approved in a subsequent term.
This list is subject to change without notice.
