ELI 420. Research Paper Writing.

ELI 520. Research Paper or Thesis Writing.
Non-native English speaker; graduate standing. (2).
This course is designed for non-native speaker graduate students undertaking or planning to undertake a substantive research paper, and/or who are required to produce AR progress or technical reports. Normally 520 is not open to first-year graduate students. The course discusses research paper requirements, and practice such elements as developing problem-statements, expressing hypotheses and arguments, relating verbal and non-verbal material, incorporating the literature, and drawing conclusions. Regular consultations also are provided to work on individual basis.
ELI 584. International Teaching Assistants Seminar and Practicum.
Graduate standing and permission of instructor. Participants must have an IGSI appointment to register for this course. (1).
IGSI Seminar and Practicum is designed to provide language support instruction to ITAs who have shown considerable ability (4 on the screening) in using academic English, but who need additional feedback, evaluation, and suggestions for improvement in their language and communicative skills in the laboratory, classroom or office hour assignments. Emphasis will be on improving presentation skills, i.e., effective use of body language, gestures, stress intonation, etc., listening and responding skills in the classroom, eliciting and negotiation techniques in the office hours and lab, and general interaction skills needed in the TA situation.

Non-native English speaker. Graduate standing and permission of instructor. (2).
ELI 601. Speaking in Research Contexts.
Non-native English speaker; advanced graduate standing. (2).
ELI 800. Advising on Academic & Research Writing.
Graduate standing and Permission of Instructor; For international students: ELI 520 or 600. (3).
ELI 993. Graduate Student Instructor Training Program.
Graduate standing. (1).
A seminar for all beginning graduate student instructors, consisting of a two day orientation before the term starts and periodic workshops/meetings during the Fall Term. Beginning graduate student instructors are required to register for this class.
ELI 994. College Teaching in the U.S.: Pedagogy, Culture and Language.
Graduate standing and permission of instructor. Must be nominated by department. (1).
This course is designed for foreign-born graduate students who hope to become teaching assistants at the University of Michigan. Workshop is required for all foreign-born Literature, Science and the Arts graduate students before they can teach. The course is a practicum for teaching in a United States setting. The contents includes a focus on the language, pedagogy and culture of the instructional contexts in an American university.
