Introductory course presenting basic grammatical information complemented with oral drills.

142. First-Year Czech. Czech 141. No credit granted to those who have completed or are enrolled in Czech 143. (4). (LR).
Continuation of Czech 141 with exercises in reading, writing, listening, and speaking.

241. Second-Year Czech. Czech 142 or 143. (4). (LR).
A continuation of Czech 141/142 with an emphasis on reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

242. Second-Year Czech. Czech 241. (4). (LR).
A continuation of Czech 241 with an emphasis on reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

This course builds on the knowledge of Czech acquired during the first and second years. It covers the following: (1) a review of Czech grammar, (2) readings in Czech culture and literature, (3) conversational Czech.

480. Supervised Czech Reading. Permission of instructor. (1-4). (Excl). May be elected for credit twice.
Reading original works in selected areas of Czech literature.

483. Czech Literature from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment. Permission of instructor. (3). (Excl).
A survey covering the literature of the medieval, humanist and baroque periods in Bohemia. It also includes a basic survey of the history of visual arts and architecture in the periods named.

484. Modern Czech Literature. (3). (Excl).
A survey covering Czech literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with stress upon more recent works.
