A survey of the American musical theatre from about 1890 to 1940. An overview of theatrical forms, including vaudeville, revues, operettas, and book musicals, from the turn of the century to 1940, with particular attention to the composers and lyricists of the period. Major works to be examined include Showboat, Of Thee I Sing, and Porgy and Bess.

A continuation of MUSTHTRE 441, from 1940 to the present, with particular emphasis on theatrical criticism; analysis of book, music, and lyrics in shows of various genres; and the compilation of a bibliography.
