1. Self-Assessment

At the University of Michigan, writing will play a critical role in your thinking and learning, beginning with your first year. In some classes, your writing will be your most important tool for demonstrating that you understand course concepts. Your ability to write prose that, at its best, is characterized by intellectual force, clarity, appropriate organization and development of ideas, effective use of evidence, cogency, and stylistic control will be crucial to your success as a student here. Because writing plays such a vital role in all academic disciplines at Michigan, your first writing course must meet your actual needs as a writer so that you can successfully make the transition to college writing.

All students entering the University should fulfill the First-Year Writing Requirement during their first year. They may do so by taking Practicum and another first-year writing course, or by taking a first-year writing course alone. After meeting with an advisor or a Writing Workshop instructor, students decide which of these alternatives is better for them on the basis of a self-assessment.

2. Writing Practicum (ECB 100-105)

Practicum students develop writing skills that will allow them to take full advantage of their experiences in Michigan courses. Far from being a remedial class, Practicum is designed to support students with limited experience writing the sorts of pieces most often assigned and valued at the University. Thus, Practicum enhances students' abilities to succeed here. Practicum offers opportunities for students to improve how they organize, develop, and support ideas, analyze complex materials, and develop a writer's voice. The course requires biweekly tutorial sessions with the instructor; this concentrated individual attention has proven crucial to the success of students with limited writing experience.

Practicum is the best placement for you if:

  • You learn best with one-on-one instructor support
  • You have limited experience with writing
  • You have limited experience with revision
  • You have typically written essays of under two pages
  • You have written fewer than three essays a year in high school
  • You do not often read for pleasure
  • You have difficulties making your writing correct

3. Upper-level (Junior/Senior) Writing Requirement

See the introduction to the Course Guide for information about the LS&A Upper-level Writing Requirement and for a list of courses approved for satisfaction of that requirement.

4. Peer Tutor Program

The Sweetland Writing Center Peer Tutor Program is now accepting applications for the Peer Writing Tutor Program for Fall Term 2000. We will continue to accept applications through registration. The program would be appropriate for students who have 52 credits and who want to gain skills in education, writing and/or social work.

The program entails a two-semester commitment. In the first term, selected candidates enroll in our three credit training seminar, ECB 300. Enrollment in this class is by override only. In the second semester, students enroll in ECB 301 and tutor face-to-face and on-line, earning 1-3 credits, depending on how many hours they are available. After successfully completing these two semesters, tutors are eligible for employment as paid tutors.

To apply, students should pick up an application from the Sweetland Writing Center, located in Angell Hall, room 1139. Along with the application, a writing sample and an instructor's recommendation are required.

ECB 100. Writing Practicum.


Prerequisites & Distribution: (2). (Excl). Offered mandatory credit/no credit. (TUTORIAL). Any combination of ECB 100-105 may be elected for a total of four credits.

Practicum students develop writing skills that will allow them to take full advantage of their experiences in Michigan courses. Students will gain practice and experience in:

  1. writing as a process of drafting and revising
  2. reading and writing analytically
  3. developing a writer's voice, which includes distinguishing between their ideas and those of others
  4. studying models of writing of the kind they are expected to produce
  5. using the computer to draft and revise papers and to talk about writing
  6. attending to grammar and mechanics

Classes meet two hours per week. Each student receives an additional half-hour of individual instruction every other week in a conference with the instructor. Many sections are taught in a computer-equipped classroom, which offers students the opportunity to use computers for research as well as writing. Practicum is not graded but does earn two course credits. Class enrollment is limited to eighteen students.

ECB 300. Seminar in Peer Tutoring.

This seminar serves two overlapping constituencies: students who are preparing to become secondary school English teachers and those who have been selected to join the Sweetland Writing Center peer tutoring program. Coursework for both groups includes an introduction to composition theory, the conference model of writing pedagogy, peer tutoring theory, and training and practice in face-to-face and OWL (on-line) tutoring. After completing ECB 300, many students will go on to take ECB 301 in the next Fall or Winter Term, where they earn course credit for serving as writing tutors. Students will learn about writing in the different disciplines, become reflective writers by examining the strengths and weaknesses in their own writing, practice peer collaboration, and begin, under supervision, to tutor in the program. Course work includes three papers as well as brief reports on the tutoring experience. Registration by override only. Contact the Sweetland Writing Center.

ECB 301. Directed Peer Tutoring.

The basis of credit in this class is students' reflective tutoring of peer writers. Open only to students who have completed ECB 300. Those who enroll for one credit will tutor two hours per week, for two credits three hours per week, for three credits four hours per week. In addition, all peer tutors meet one hour per week with the instructor for a discussion section. The weekly meeting serves for reflecting on and administering the peer writing tutor program, including the OWL. It is also used for further professional development, carried out through reading and writing projects. Registration by override only. Contact the Sweetland Writing Center.
