This course will address these questions and many more concerning Habitat for Humanity's work towards elimanating poverty housing worldwide. We will examine the progress and goals of this international, non-profit organization through the readings from a book written by Habitat for Humanity's founder, Millard Fuller, and the class discussions. Students in this section are required to participate in a build a day with the University of Michigan's student chapter of HFH.

K-grams (short for "Kids Programs") consists of a plethora of opportunities for college students to be involved with elementary kids. Alice lloyd holds a special relationship with Vetal School in Detroit, where we engage in activities such as the BookMARK mentoring program, special art projects, bringing the kids to campus, and much more. With this class you will be a pen pal with the 4th or 5th grader and visit Vetal at least four times during the term for hands-on activities with the kids. Humans, it seems, are conflicted alot. We hate it when others tell us what to do, often resisting to the pointof employing physical violence to protect autonomy, yet we do not hesitate to create constraints on the individual actions of others. These competing impulses underlie the delicate balancing acts in American law between individual rights and community interests.

This course will explore the individual-community balances as it relates to the human body. Under what circumstances can a community justify prohibiting people from doing what they want with their own bodies? How much interference with the ability to act as we choose can people bear and still be considered free? What is the appropiate balance in our laws between social order and autonomy? Why is autonomy so important anyway?

Legal matters inspire this course, but this is not a course about substantive law. Our aim is to explore how competing human desires shape the laws that govern us. Through examination and debate, each of us will increase our ability to ask and answer difficult questions, and each of us will become more skilled advocates for our positions. Topics to ve covered include: sexual harassment; the death penalty; pornography; the war on drugs; and euthanasia. Students are expected to write and revise five papers, to complete class workshops, and to participate in class discussions.

If you have ever considered becoming a lawyer or simply had an interest in law or government, this course will engage that interest by presenting a selection of exemplary legal controversies. To get our legal juices flowing and to give you an introduction to reading cases, we will start with one fairly straightforward, early decision of the United States Supreme Court, Johnson v. M'Intosh, a case of discrimination against Native Americans. Then, we will read three cases on affirmative action including the groundbreaking Bakke v The Regents of the University of California, as well as the two university cases, Grutter v. Bollinger, et. al, and Gratz v. Bollinger, et. al. Over the course of the semester, we will also track developments in these cases and read related articles and books.

Have you ever wondered how the Nazis came to power, or why the Germans so enthusiastically embraced Hitler? Over the course of the semester, we will address these and several other key questions regarding Nazism: Who joined the movement? Who voted for hitler? How did the National Socialist Regime function? Was there any ressitance? And, perhaps most troubling of all, how were the Germans capable of the Holocaust?

To answer these questions, we will study several documents from the period, including official editcts, private correspondence, and propaganda films (primary texts), as well as current historical scholarship (secondary texts). Through the analysis of these primary and secondary sources, we will discover that historians do not merely collect facts to tell a story about the past; rather, they interpret these sources to develop historical arguments. We therefore aim to examine how historians (and other scholars) advance particular claims (or arguments) based on an analysis of evidence, and seek to reproduce this technique in our own writing. This model of argumentative writing will serve you well regardless of what academic or professional field you pursue.

It is helpful to approach writing as a process rather than a goal. No first draft is ever perfect, because we only develop our ideas as we write and rewrite. We must therefore return to our drafts to improve them, to clarify our thinking for ourselves and to persuade our readers. This persuasion consists not only of analysing evidence to support our claims, but also of addressing alternate viewpoints. In this sense, argumentative writing is also a process of dialogue with our audience, anticipating their objections and addressing their concerns.

This course will invite students to explore the spectrum of practices in body art from ancient cultural traditions like human design to growing number of pop options available at our local mall (e.g., body piercing, permanent make up, nail brushing etc). We will read histories about origins of body art and view documentaries that voyage into some of the most controversial subcultures that use body art as physical and symbolic representation of their politics and personalities. We will also look at some of the most recent trends in body art, like the popularity of tattoos among young men and women, and growing movement against genital circumcision. Furthermore, we will discuss what constitutes identity and how it differs among different people. We will also explore different ways of defining body image and the importance of maintaining those images to us. To supplement our knowledge, we will discuss the role of media in portraying so called "ideal image" to the society.

Most importantly, students will have an opportunity to analyze their perception about body art and its personal/cultural significance to them, in a series of argumentative essays.

We will strengthen our understanding of the conventions of lyric expression by looking at two renaissances in poetry: the early modern Renaissance in England and the Harlem Renaissance in America. Do we have control our own sexuality? Who decides whether we should wait, engage or abstain and what determines the consequences of our sexual behavior? The topics covered in sex ed, the availability of birth control, the legality of abortion: these issues are decided by politicians and judges in places like Washington, DC, Lansing, MI and Albany, NY. This class will explore the values underlying reproduction within the law and public policy and examine how those laws and policies are made. We will look at well-known developments such as Roe v. Wade as well as funding for abstinence-only education and requiring insurance companies to pay for birth control. This class will engage students in policy-making and allow them to explore where their own values fit into the process. Five five-page papers will allow students to develop an understanding of the issues and to articulate opinions about sexuality and the function of policy makers. Equipped with knowledge of the players and the process, students may discover that they can have a role in controlling reproductive law and policy.

Do you believe that divine fate, free will, or random chance guides your life? Do you choose who you want to be or does your DNA determine your personality? If you've ever wondered whether you are in charge of your heart and mind or if invisible strings manipulated by god, your culture, your subconscious, your language control your choices, then take this class. We take these questions on our voyage into the deepest recesses of ourselves through two forms of creative expression: poetry and memoir.

We will read poems and memoirs by creative writers who live to write because they write to live writers who work by Hemingway's precept that their root charge is to distinguish what they really think from what their culture would have them think. This "honesty-principle" will guide our trip into ourselves, as we forge our own languages and personal mythologies. After all, how can we live freely, on our own terms, if we don't even know what our own terms are?

You will have two main writing projects: 1) a journal where every day you will record and interpret your dreams or write non-stop, whithout lifting your pen from paper or fingers from keys, for 15 minutes, and 2) a polished chapter from your memoir or collection of poetry. During the course of the semester, you will explore both genres by reading great poets and writers and then emulating the techniques of their craft. You will compose approximately 100 pages of writing by December. You will draft poems and personal essays, exploring each of these forms until you feel confident enough to compose a final prose or poetry project of your own. We will work as a team, workshopping every draft in peer or full-class editing sessions. Because this class is about self-discovery and creative communication, you must be prepared to take risks, battle with your beliefs, and (most importantly) give thoughtful, honest feedback to your peers.

Do you remember those cartoons where the hero has a little angel and a little devil sitting on his shoulders telling him to do the exact opposite thing? An internal version of this conversation arises when your conscious brain and your sub-conscious mind don't agree. This class in Hypnotherapy will help you listen in on those conversations. Hypnotherapy lets your conscious and sub-conscious to talk to one another, in a way that you will remember both sides of the conversation. Art is a personal and developmental process of communication, and to that end, the objective of this class is to overcome our inhibitions to making art. You will explore the unfamiliar, learn new skills, experiment, and build your confidence, enabling you to trust your creative intuition. The first half of the semester we will investigate child art, street art, performance art, mural painting, graffiti, and conceptual works. Learn the fine art of black and white film developing and printing in a darkroom. Basic concepts about film chemistry and development of film into negatives are covered, as well as how to make contact sheets and prints from negatives. Refinement of skills involve dodging and burning prints, use of filters, and special effects such as solarization, double exposures, and hand-tinting photographs. Lab time is assigned for students to complete their work. The goal of the class is to create polished, professional, and display-quality artwork, which can then be exhibited in Alice Lloyd Hall. As a class, we will decide on topics of exploration.

Requirements: Photo assigments and attendance. Class time is more focused on darkroom results and thus students are required to have a solid understanding of photography concepts and practices as a prerequisite for this course. It is essential that you provide your own 35-mm camera (flash optional but not necessary), preferably a SLR (point-and-shot cameras are not acceptable). If you have any questions about what is an acceptable camera, please e-mail Lisa Powers, instructor, as soon as possible at lspowers@umich.edu.
