This course examines the history and aesthetics of African American film making from the silent era to the present. Films will be analyzed within their socio-cultural contexts, with particular attention to how constructions of race and identity interact with class, gender, and sexuality. We will also consider the link between film and other forms of Black popular culture. The course is organized chronologically, providing the opportunity to study the historical development of African American cinema. Reoccurring themes are also emphasized, such as defining race, addressing issues of difference within the African American community, reworking Hollywood genres, and the representation of the relationships between African Americans and other peoples of color. Midterm exam, final exam, textual analysis paper of 5-6 pages in length, research paper 8-10 pages in length and occasional quizzes.
