Chronologically, our survey will begin with 18th-Century Choson Korea and end with the present-day South and North Korea. Through a combination of lectures and discussion of sources historical scholarship, novels, short stories, and visual images we will reconsider central themes and narrative strategies in existing historical scholarship on Korea. Topics to be examined are: Korea's entry into the modern world; the nature of Japanese colonial rule; Korean nationalist and socialist movements; the Korean war; and problems related to economic development.
