Fall Academic Term 2004 (September 7 - December 23)

You have accepted an invitation to a gathering. Imagine it as a party, if you like. You don't know anyone there, but you assume you have something in common with them, because, well, there you are. Some people have been there for a while; some people are just arriving. If you're one of those people, what do you need? An introduction.
An introduction would present you to the other people at the gathering. It would show you the food and the drinks and the bathroom. It would show you about some of the norms, habits, and practices of the local culture. It would get you thinking about why people would want to spend their time — and much of their lives — doing what these people do.
Graduate school isn't a party, but it is a gathering. This course introduces you to graduate study: to the academy and its practices, to the community of this department, to the nuts and bolts of research. And to the big questions : why are you here? Why are your teachers here? What do we think we're doing and (why) do we think it's worth doing?
Ultimately, the course's goal is to provoke you to think critically and passionately about what nourishes you, intellectually and otherwise. And not just to think about it, but to do something about it.
Taught in English. Required for all entering grad students in RLL; open to other RLL graduate students as well.
Cost: $50-$199.
