POLISH 432. Topics in Polish Literature.
Literature
Section 001 – Workshop in Literary Translation from Polish into English. Meets with Polish 832.001.
Prerequisites: Juniors, Seniors, and Graduate students. A knowledge of Polish is not required. (2). May be repeated for a total of six credits.

The course is designed as a workshop in literary translation from Polish into English. It includes a variety of texts: novels, short stories, drama, memoirs, criticism, and poetry. The choice of texts will accommodate the students' particular interests and individual translation projects. Special attention will be paid to problems of voice, syntax, idioms, word choice, sound patterns, metrics, and cultural idiosyncrasies. No exams; grading based on the students' translation projects.
POLISH 450. Directed Polish Reading.

The course is intended for students who wish to build on Polish 325 and/or Polish 326, and read Polish texts in the original. Prerequisite: Polish 325 and/or 326 and reading knowledge of Polish. Students are evaluated on the basis of oral and written reports. No exams.

The course surveys the development of Polish literature in terms of authors and major literary movements from the beginning until 1900. Individual critical analysis of texts is required. A knowledge of Polish is not required. An oral report and a research paper.
