By the end of the course, students will have had opportunities to:
- become familiar with the history of foreign language teaching in the United States and theories of second/foreign language acquisition (SLA) that inform methods, approaches, and techniques used in foreign language teaching in the U.S.;
- demonstrate understanding of "proficiency-oriented" and communicative approaches to language instruction and develop materials and teaching techniques consistent with these orientations to teaching;
- learn techniques for teaching and evaluation each of the four skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing), grammar, vocabulary, and culture
- explore ways of integrating the teaching of language, literature, and culture;
- demonstrate the ability to select and create instructional materials that reflect an understanding of learning strategies and a sensitivity to diverse learning styles;
- develop, organize, and carry out pair, small group and whole-class activities;
- develop a critical and reflective attitude about teaching; to be accomplished in part through readings and in-class discussions, class observations, and class members' sharing of ideas and techniques related to their own experiences as language learners and teachers.
