Intended for those engaged in original laboratory research at an advanced level. This course number is most frequently elected by senior Honors students who have completed MCDB 300 and who are completing their research and writing their thesis. A final paper is required. The work in this course may continue for two semesters. A 'Y' grade can be reported at the end of the first-term to indicate work in progress. At the end of the second term of MCDB 400, the final grade is posted for both term's elections. Designed for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, this course will explore the connections between developmental biology, molecular genetics, and animal evolution. Textbook readings will be supplemented with journal club presentations and seminars to further students' understanding of the cellular and molecular basis of the origin and diversification of animal form.

Aim: We will introduce students to the state of the art in bioinformatics as it applies to protein sequence analysis and database searching on the web. We will identify three dimensional structural motifs that are commonly found in proteins and discuss how they are related to the protein's functions. We will also consider how proteins fold into their proper 3D structure.

Content: The course will be 2/3 lecture and 1/3 hands on computer manipulation of sequences, modeling, and discussion. The course will also provide guidance in reading and interpreting original scientific literature.

A big part of the course is using the web to analyze sequence of the protein you are interested in. If you have a protein in which you are interested, you can analyze it for credit, otherwise you will be assigned a protein. Techniques you learn will be useful in many areas of work, since biology has gone molecular and structural. The course assumes a very basic level of computer competence but if you have ever surfed the WEB you will do fine.

Undergraduates who previously have taken an introductory biochemistry course act as TAs for Introductory Biochemistry (BIOLOGY 311). TAs meet with the instructor for a two-hour class each week for lectures, presentations, and discussions of teaching and biochemistry. TAs also prepare an oral report on a recent advance in biochemistry which they present to their peers and the instructor. The major roles of the TAs are to examine the students on their mastery of unit material and to help the students with explanations supplementary to the textbook. At the completion of an instructor-generated written quiz, the student and TA grade the quiz together. TAs learn considerable biochemistry by repeated teachings of unit materials and, in addition, profit from their experience as teachers and evaluators.

This course is a comparative study of animal endocrine functions with emphasis on the cellular origin and chemical nature of hormones, the cellular and molecular mechanisms of hormone action, general endocrine control mechanisms, the evolution of hormones and hormonal control and their physiological actions in animals. The course will concentrate on the endocrine systems of vertebrates; there will be limited treatment of human endocrinology. Instruction in MCDB 418 assumes a basic familiarity with general and comparative physiology (BIOLOGY 225 or its equivalent is a prerequisite). Training in chemistry through organic is essential, and courses in biochemistry and cell and molecular biology are helpful.

This laboratory course provides hands-on experience with methods used in endocrinological investigations. The students will learn techniques ranging from the organismal to the molecular level. The course emphasizes hypothesis testing, modern techniques, and data analysis. Prior or concurrent enrollment in MCDB 418 is required to take this course. The enrollment is limited to 12 students. Students should be aware that this course uses live animals. The laboratory will meet twice a week (a four-hour session and a two-hour session), however, students should anticipate an additional two or three hours laboratory time at various (and occasionally odd) times in the week. Course assignments include a term paper, quizzes, and other short assignments.

This course deals primarily with the properties of individual nerve cells, and small groups of nerve cells. This provides the basis for understanding information processing by the nervous system, learning and memory, development of neurons, and neurological and psychiatric disorders. This lab course provides an introduction to experimental approaches in neurobiology. Emphasis is on molecular, anatomical, and physiological approaches for studying neuronal function. Among the molecular topics to be covered are analysis of cDNA clones, PCR amplification of DNA, and expression of genes in foreign tissues. Among the anatomical topics to be covered are gross and microscopic anatomy of nervous systems, axonal pathway tracing, and immunocytochemical localization of specific neuronal proteins. Among the physiological topics to be covered are intracellular and extracellular recording, as well as the use of computers in the acquisition and analysis of data. This course is intended for students who plan to engage in research in neurobiology. A course pack is required.

Comprehensive coverage of the general principles governing the structures, synthesis, and functions of DNA, RNA, and proteins in the context of the cell. Emphasizes understanding methods and interpretation of data. Neuroscience 601 represents the first half of a year long, graduate-level survey of neuroscience. The goals for Neuroscience 601 and 602 are: 1) To provide our students with a sense of the state of current knowledge in molecular, cellular, developmental, integrative and cognitive neuroscience. Considerable emphasis is put on pulling together information obtained from different types of investigations (anatomical, physiological, behavioral, biochemical, genetic) to gain a balanced view of neuroscience. 2) To provide our students with a sense of how knowledge was obtained, by reading and discussing "classic papers." 3) To provide our students with a sense of where the current frontier is, by reading and discussing very recent papers. Each week this class meets for 3-5 hours, with a mix of lectures and discussion. The major topics treated in Neuroscience 601 and 602 are: I) Excitable Membranes, II) Molecular Neuropharmacology, and III) Developmental Neurobiology.
