Course Homepage: https://coursetools.ummu.umich.edu/2001/winter/womenstd/483/005.nsf

This course will explore the cultural workings of gender and sexuality through the lens of popular music. Our means of engaging these issues will comprise (1) selected readings from the critical and theoretical literature, (2) relevant musical and other works on disc and film, (3) class discussions, and (4) assigned writing projects. We'll consider multiple angles of involvement with pop music, especially (1) production, including creation and performance; (2) reception (sometimes "consumption"), including listening, watching, dancing to, etc.; (3) criticism – i.e., oral or written commentary on a musical experience or object (which may be deployed toward more abstract theorizing).
