This course examines the rise and evolution of Islamic political movements in the major areas of the Muslim world. After a brief introduction to Islam as a religious, cultural, and political tradition, we shall address the phenomenon of so-called political Islam and its ideological underpinnings. While the shared ideological premises of Islamic movements are extremely important, we shall also try to highlight the distinctive political and social strategies of such movements in various regional contexts. Special consideration will be given to the role of the political and social environments in which Islamic movements evolve and which give them their distinct character. In addition, the course includes screenings of recent films as well as lectures by guest speakers with expertise in different regional manifestations of political Islam.
