The purpose of this course is (1) to introduce students to a range of scholars and practitioners who work on Eastern European and/or the former Soviet Union, (2) to reflect on the relevance of area studies and context-specific knowledge in various disciplines and fields of professional work, and, (3) to enhance students‚Äô ability to engage the interdisciplinary audience likely to review applications for fellowships and subsequent employment. Students will attend the weekly CREES Brown Bag talk. Often the class guest will be the Brown Bag speaker for that day, and class will be closely tied to the topic of the Brown Bag talk. Each student will identify an article that illustrates the combination of area and disciplinary/professional interests or which is an example of problems in this effort. Each student also will prepare a research proposal or project proposal that combines his or her disciplinary/professional and area interests. The proposals will be circulated and discussed.
