112(111). Languages of the World. (SS).
How many languages are there and how are they related? Where did they come from and how long have they been here? How widely do they differ and what do they have in common? This course explores the variety of human languages in terms of family relationships and types of grammatical systems. We will look briefly at historical and grammatical methods of classification before looking in more detail at specific languages of various families and types. Grades will be based on short assignments, a midterm, and a final exam. (Start)
