342(Ling. 342). Advanced Academic Skills, Oral Communications. Permission of instructor. A maximum of four ELI credits may be counted toward a degree. (1). (Excl).

This course is designed for non-native graduate and undergraduate students who have sufficient language proficiency to be admitted to the University but who need to improve their oral presentation, lecture comprehension, and note-taking skills in order to perform successfully in academic work. Grades are based on regular attendance, successful completion of specified assignments, and satisfactory performance on a final evaluation. One credit for undergraduates. 343. Advanced Academic Skills, Writing Concentration. Permission of instructor. A maximum of four ELI credits may be counted toward a degree. (1). (Excl).

This course is designed to (1) provide training and opportunity to develop and improve reading strategies; (2) improve vocabulary development; and (3) improve proficiency in ability to write coherent, accurate and organized academic texts. The overall goal is to provide students with appropriate strategies for improving academic reading and writing skills. Students will be individually counseled on their writing, and small group work and teacher-directed activities will be used in class. Students are required to attend classes, participate in class activities, and satisfactorily complete assignments. There will be a final exam. [Cost:1] [WL:3] (Feak)

344. Advanced Pronunciation Skills. Permission of instructor. A maximum of four ELI credits may be counted toward a degree. (1). (Excl).

This course has two purposes: (1) to meet short-range goals of improving speech intelligibility through modification of ARTICULATION (i.e., detailed work on vowels, consonants, clusters, syllabics, etc.), and VOCAL FEATURES (i.e., detailed work on stress, rhythm, intonation, etc.) and (2) to guide students in developing speech awareness and self-monitoring of speech which will allow learning to continue after formal course work ends. Overall goals are: improving intelligibility, increasing communicative competence in verbalizing ideas, and developing self-confidence in using oral English. A variety of speaking activities in class sessions, small-group work, and self-study assignments will be used. Video filming and critiquing sessions will focus on students' individual needs.
