Eastern Europe continues to be in ferment as the individual countries in the region develop new relations with the USSR and new approaches to politics and economics. This course is an interdisciplinary survey of the history, culture, politics and economics of Eastern European societies, and is intended to provide a background to better understand the area and the changes now occurring. Special attention will be given to the revolutions of 1989 and the post-Communist era in Eastern Europe. Course requirements; midterm and final essay exams, a short paper, and participation in class discussions. (Parmelee, Harsanyi)
