101(105). Elementary Danish. (4). (Excl).
This course offers an introduction to the Danish language, focusing on the development of skills in reading, writing, speaking, and grammar. More specifically, this course is designed to teach the students genuine communication in basic situations, including the ability to read and write what they are able to say. They
will also be able to read short articles or excerpts of genuine
language. Students will also be taught basic knowledge of the
sound structure (phonetics and phonology), morphological structure
(verbal and nominal paradigms), and the syntactic structure of
Danish at an elementary level. Additionally, students will be
introduced to the context and setting of modern Danish language
in term of its current use, relevant issues and concerns, political
and religious institutions, and the background of cultural referents
shared by all Danish speakers. Cost:2

This course serves the needs of students who wish to develop
special topics not offered in the Scandinavian Studies curriculum.
It may be a program of directed readings with reports, or it may
be a research project and long paper. Either must be supervised
by a faculty member, and the student must have the faculty member's
agreement before electing the course. This course is also used
by concentrators for developing preliminary research and a prospectus
for the senior thesis.
