French, Italian, and Spanish Placement Tests

If you are planning to take an elementary French, Italian, or Spanish class and you are a new student, freshman or transfer student, or you have not yet begun the elementary language sequence on the Ann Arbor campus, you must take the placement test in order to register for the correct course. You must register for the class into which you have been placed.

If you have registered for a class prior to taking the test, you will still be required to take the test in order to verify that you are in the appropriate level class.

If you have already taken French, Italian, or Spanish 101-232 on the Ann Arbor campus, or if you have already taken the placement test once, you are not eligible to take the test again. The purpose of this course is to advance students' comprehension and use of the French language while introducing students to Francophone literature, history, and culture. To these ends, we will read and discuss selections by a number of Francophone authors, and view two films (which we will choose together in light of the group's interests). We will also examine the institutional world of françophonie by looking at materials and publications from the Francophone summits (including the preparations for the September 1999 summit in New Brunswick, Canada) and official Francophone agencies. The emphasis will be on reading, writing, and lively discussion of Francophone materials. Each student will give a brief in-class presentation on a Francophone nation, and will write weekly, one-page response papers (evaluated for ideas and use of French).

The grade will be determined based on class participation, the in-class presentation, writing assignments, homework assignments, and listening comprehension and grammar quizzes.

This course will trace the development of French nineteenth and early twentieth century detective fiction from the crime story to the detective novel (roman policier). All of the works studied will be short stories. We will give careful consideration to the development of detective fiction from an historical, sociological and literary perspective. During the course of the term, we will try to answer the following questions: What were the precursors of detective fiction? In what type of political, sociological, historical, and literary environment did the genre develop? How was the genre defined in the nineteenth century? How is it defined today? What is a roman feuilleton? While the primary focus of the course is on French detective fiction, we will also read Edgar Allan Poe's "Murders In The Rue Morgue". We will also discuss a few scholarly articles, written in English, about the development of the genre.

Detective fiction also raises some interesting questions concerning the role of the detective in society. We will attempt to theorize the "detective" as a generalizable term that can be applied to various disciplines and explore how all of us as students, professionals, researchers, and critics share something in common with the detective we encounter throughout the course.

There will also be a generalized discussion of the current fascination with the televised Police Drama, Court TV, the televising of live criminal trials. One of the things you many want to think about is: How are these programs the beneficiary of a genre that was inaugurated over a century and a half ago and what makes them so fascinating?

Childhood narratives have often been perceived as a naive genre, a nostalgic recollection of an ideal paradise before the fall into the adult world. In this course, students will explore these narratives as texts in which authors submit their past, education, history, and culture to retrospective scrutiny. If the past is on trial in childhood narratives, it is because each author seeks to become the subject of his or her own story rather than being defined by the values, views, and histories imposed on him or her. Writing "against" one's own childhood represents therefore a path for these authors to conquer their own voice and place within society.

We will study the relationship between personal identity and questions of gender, language, and history. We will analyze to which extent the writing of one's past is really the writing of one's present, since childhood can either be valued in order to criticize the present or, conversely, criticized to valorize the present. In order to address these issues, we will explore three different childhood narratives that each privilege one aspect of various authors' pasts, such as gender issues, experiences of language and school, and how personal history is affected by History.

During the term, students will do two oral presentations on the texts we will read and discuss in class. They will prepare questions for the class in advance, introduce the assigned passage, and facilitate discussion. For the two first sections of the course, students will write critical essays on the texts or films discussed in class. As a final course project, students will write a story from their own childhood using the narratives they will have read as models. Students will peer-edit and rewrite each of the written assignments, giving them the opportunity to improve their writing skills, develop their ideas, and strengthen the organization of their arguments.
