This course will deal with the work of two Yugoslav film directors, Dusan Makavejev and Emir Kusturica, whose films have attracted sustained international interest, both because of the controversial nature of their themes and because of their innovative cinematic form. Makavejev's films are constructed in a highly imaginative way. Rather than being traditional fictional narratives, they are composed of fictional strands which intertwine with documentary (or pseudo-documentary) strands, including archival footage of historical events, old historical films, interviews, etc. The shots from the various strands are collided with one another to create a complex network of associations, often jarring and ambiguous. This probing critical film practice has been used by Makavejev to critique (among other things) the neo-Stalinist practices of Communist regimes, the dogmatism of Western movements preaching liberation, the operation of international corporate capitalism, the nature of personality cults, the theories of Wilhelm Reich, the links between patriarchy and national chauvinism, and the compelling relationships between the psychological and the political in human behavior. Kusturica's approach has sometimes been described as a "magical realism." His films have examined very topical issues in the life of Yugoslavia from the 1950s to the present: contemporary social mores and their links to politics, the nature of Titoism, the Yugoslav "partisan" mythology and its reflection in the civil wars of the 1990s, and the philosophy and spirit of the Rom (the "Gypsies"). The films are initially filled with details that at least suggest real situations, but then they leap into images and actions that are clearly fantastic – although they remain set in authentic milieus (to a greater or lesser extent). The fantasy hyperbolically and metaphorically comments on the reality, without ever completely displacing it. As in the case of Makavejev's films, the result is a revelation of underlying social, psychological and political truths. We will examine how the inventive styles of these two very important filmmakers "work" and how they have developed in the context of the events of Yugoslav history from the 1960s to the present. We will view and discuss fourteen films (along with accompanying readings). There will be three required papers (6-8 pages in length each).
