Medieval Occitan Grammars and their Theoretical Sources. In the Middle Ages, the Latin grammar tradition was very strong, but in some areas, practical reasons led to the writing of pedagogical grammars of the vernacular tongue. The earliest such grammars were done for the langue d'oc of the troubadors. Their poetry had made their language international and many foreigners used this language also as a literary medium. Authors of these grammars followed Latin grammar tradition and strove to make their description of the vernacular fit the Latin mold, although these grammarians were often sensitive to ways in which their language was different from Latin. Key passages in these medieval grammars will be interpreted and theories implicit in these passages will be discussed. Class discussion will also be centered on ways of describing these grammars on the basis of modern linguistic theories. Students will do selected readings and prepare a term paper on a topic which was discussed in class. A reading knowledge of French or another Romance language would be useful. (Morgan)

MARC 421. The Celestina as a humanist masterpiece. Its literary background. We will study the comedies of Terence and the moral essays of Seneca to see the place of each in the Spanish play. We will also consider rhetoric as the principle determining element in the formal architecture of the work. (Course taught in English.
