Courses in Near Eastern and North African Studies (Division 440)

490. Proseminar on Iran, Turkey and the Gulf. (3). (SS).

This is a seminar on Iran and Turkey: beginning with discussions about the nature and methods of Near East area study, Islam, and Muslim society, students will read and discuss some of the most stimulating literature on Iran and Turkey. Through the readings and class discussions, the major issues in the study of the societies of Iran and Turkey will emerge, and we will compare those issues and problems in their present-day framework. Prospective students should have had at least one course on the Near East and must be prepared to read 250 pages per week. (Lindner)
