490. Proseminar on Iran, Turkey and the Gulf. (3). (SS).
This is a seminar on Iran, Turkey and the Gulf. The course will focus on their modern history and contemporary social and political developments: the emergence of nation-states, urbanization, changing social and economic relations, the appearance of new social groups, and the contest between religious and national sentiments for the political allegiance of the peoples of the region. Students are expected to participate in classroom discussion and to write a term paper. Prospective students should have had at least one course on the Near East and must be prepared to read 250 pages per week. (Commins)
