Courses in Near Eastern and North African Studies (Division 440)

491. Proseminar on the Arab World. (3). (Excl).

The focus of the course will be on Shi'ite movements in the modern Arab East (Lebanon, Iraq, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia). We will explore the transition from peasant and semi-feudal societies to mobilized ideological movements demanding political participation in the modern state. Texts will include books by Fouad Ajami and A.R Norton. The grade will be based on class discussion and a term paper. (Cole)
