This course is designed to give students an extensive survey of the cultural characteristics of the Arab world by situating the practices and traditions of the Arab world into their own unique setting. The material chosen, both for the lecture and for reading, focuses on issues of ethnic diversity that define the Arab world in particular and place into a greater multi-cultural realm. Special attention will be given to family, gender relations, National and religious minorities, East-West cultures and relations, the role of the past and of social change, and Arabic art and music. The course material will be explored through lectures and videos supported by listening and viewing guides in addition to discussion based upon the assigned readings. In both their writings and in the class discussions, students discuss the meaning of culture and ethnicity and how misunderstanding these principles can lead to forms of stereotyping, intolerance, and racism. This course will begin with the question of what it means in terms of religious orientation, to be "Black" or "African-American" as opposed to African. It will then trace the development of the uniquely American phenomenon of "Black Religion," beginning in the early 18th century. From there it will trace the rise of Christianity among African-Americans, beginning in the latter half of the 18th century, specifically in the context of its ongoing relationship with Black Religion. We will do the same in the case of the rise of Islam in the early 20th century. We will then assess some of the strategies employed by both of these traditions as they seek to come to terms with the need to privilege Christianity and Islam over Black Religion, on the one hand, without sacrificing or forfeiting the legitimacy conferred by the latter on the other. In this course, we examine the Arab-Israeli conflict as it is portrayed in both Arabic and Hebrew/Israeli literary traditions poetry, short stories, novels, novellas, literary essays, and personal accounts and film, looking at how adversaries portray each other, how mutual stereotypes are created and reinforced, or broken down as the case may be, and how the conflict has shaped the development of these respective literary and filmic traditions in substantially different ways. This course will approach the study of Arabic grammar through traditional sources and methodologies. Textbooks and manuals which were compiled for enabling Arabic speaking learners to realize logical and systematic employment of Arabic grammatical features have become classic and gained widespread fame amongst scholars in the field. In this course we will use the introductory manual, AL-Ajrumiyy of Ibn Da'uud al-Sinhaji (d.723 A.H./1323 C.E.) accompanied by the commentary, Al-Tuhfa al-saniyya by Muhammad M. Abdul Ahamid.

Application and recognition of Arabic grammatical features will be examined through analyses of a variety of classical Arabic texts. The texts for this course will be materials in English translation. Introductory lectures will briefly describe the essential features of the Arabic language and the cultural and geographic area to which it gives expression. Readings and discussions will progress in chronological order from pre-Islamic to modern times. The odes of the poets of pre-Islamic Arabia and their roles in their society will be discussed. The fables of Bidpai, translated from Persian by Ibn al-Muqaffa and encompassing moralistic tales of Kalila and Dimna, will be seen to mark the introduction of prose in Arabic. The Qur'an and the biographical literature relating to the life and personality of the Prophet will be examined in detail. Excerpts from both the poetry and the prose of the classical period, including reference to the early Arab geographers and scientists will illustrate the values and concerns of Arab-Islamic civilization. The Arabian Nights, although introduced into popular Arabic culture towards the end of the Baghdad caliphate from eastern origins, will be seen to exemplify many aspects of Arab culture over extended periods of time and place. The contact and clash between Arab and Western cultures since the early 19th century will be seen to have given rise to new forms of literary expression in contemporary Arabic literature.

In the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and China, significant Muslim populations have lived under socialist rule in the 20th century. What did it mean to be a Muslim in a state whose agendas often differed greatly from Islamic principles and precedent? What has happened to these communities since the passing of state socialism and re-connections with the umma? How does looking at these cases teach us about the varied ways of being both religious and modern?

Using a case method, we will look comparatively at specific studies of Muslims in ex-Soviet Central Asia, Russia, former Yugoslavia, and China. We also will consider general issues of how to study Muslim communities, how to understand state socialisms, and how to integrate our case studies into insight about Islam and states in the world today.

The course will use articles, books, and films in a combined lecture and discussion format. All readings in English. The prerequisite is one non-language course in NES (or other area department such as ALC or Slavic), or one social science course, or permission of instructor. A special emphasis will be put on styles, strategies, and modes of narration, and on the literary and cultural contextualizations of a specific genre. The selected texts, in the course pack, will include novels, short stories, personal narratives, and critical essays, written by modern Arab authors in the Levant and North Africa in the last decade. Recent theories of narrative, and issues of gender and post-colonialism, also will be addressed. The selected texts will be assigned for reading and analysis, at an individual as well as a group level. At the individual level, each student will be asked to focus on a specific text of her or his choice, and present it in class. A substantial term-paper, in Arabic, is due toward the end of the term.

This reading course will study a broad sample of pre-19th century Ottoman texts on the elementary and intermediate level, partly in Arabic script and partly in transcription. In addition, translations in English and modern Turkish may be used. Conceptions of time will include the theoretical foundations of history, the course from creation to judgment day, periods and eras, as well as the writing of history as an eyewitness and participant in the event. Under the subject of space we will deal with universal geography, the extension of the inhabited world, divisions of the surface of the earth, the seven climates and the seven seas, and sacred geography.

The course will serve to practice of reading skills in Ottoman, but also intends to familiarize the student with Islamic underpinnings of pre-modern perceptions of the world and the place of man in that world. Part of the classroom discussion will be dedicated to work on the linguistic part of the texts, and part on the interpretation. Students will regularly be assigned original texts and secondary literature for preparation, and will write a term paper consisting of a translation and interpretation of a relevant text.

This course is designed to promote "Qur'anic literacy." On the one hand, it will treat important issues relating to provenance, e.g., the collection, arrangement and transmission of the Qur'anic text. We will also discuss such controversial topics as the theory of NASKH. On the other hand, this course will aim to equip students to handle the literary and rhetorical conventions used in the Qur'an to the end of decoding its 'meaning' and gaining some insight into the enterprise of "Qur'anic appreciation," problematizing in the process the "form/meaning" dichotomy. Each time this course is given, it is devoted to either historical, biographical or geographical texts, in Arabic, from the rise of Islam through the Mamluk period (roughly 600-1500). In Winter 2002 we turn to the rich and varied tradition of Arabic geographical writing. We study the emergence and development of this literature through scientific works, administrative geography, travel narratives, and the wonderful genre of al-masalik wal-mamalik ("roads and realms").

Students prepare Arabic texts for accurate reading and translation. There is emphasis on hands-on skills necessary for research. Students make presentations based on their own reading and research. They then write up these findings in a paper at the end of term.

Students who are interested can also take part in an ongoing project using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) for creating data bases and computerized maps derived from medieval texts.

AAPTIS 583 can serve as an introduction to classical Arabic for advanced students of Modern Standard Arabic. Prerequisite: three years of Arabic.

The object of the course is to familiarize students of Iranian and Turkic history with a variety of genres of writings emanating from their shared Persianate cultural spheres. Geographically, it shall scrutinize "texts" from Anatolia, Iraq, Iran, Central Asia and India, those very lands in which Persian became the hegemonic language of politics and literature in the medieval and early modern ages (11-17th centuries). It analyses mediums through which the Persian language became the vehicle for continuity of Pre-Islamic Indo-Iranian conceptions of history, cosmos, kingship, spirituality, and social stratification. The choice demonstrates how the Islamic synthesis between Arab, Persian, and Turko-Mongol traditions are objectified in these particular genres. The following genres shall be studied: court chronicles, "Mirrors of princes," biographies of poets, hagiographies, local histories, religious poetry, disputations and epics, chancellery documents, such as land grants, firmans and diplomatic correspondence. Some readings shall be from manuscripts to introduce the student to paleography. Secondary scholarship will be assigned to place the texts within their wider historical contexts.

This course is an introduction to the language of the Ancient Zoroastrian texts. Lessons will include the study of the alphabet, elementary grammar, and vocabulary.
