Formal organizations are the primary source of novelty in our society. Yet these same organizations and the institutions that surround them are commonly treated as impediments to innovation in social scientific theories. This course is designed to provide an intensive, research-based introduction to key sociological and economic theories about the organizational wellsprings of new knowledge, technologies, and practices.

This course for advanced undergraduates will be based around fundamental readings in organization theory and active involvement in one of several research projects that students will develop in collaboration with the instructor. In addition to introducing students to an important contemporary topic in organizational studies, this course offers to the opportunity to gain practical experience in developing, conducting, and presenting original research.
