The Physics Department discourages students from changing midstream from Physics 140 to Physics 125 or from Physics 240 to Physics 126, so it is important that students choose the first course of a physics sequence with care. Prospective engineers, physicists, and chemists should elect Physics 140/240 rather than Physics 125/126 because concentration programs in these areas require the Physics 140/240 sequence. In the case of some departmental concentration programs (e.g., biology) or in special individual circumstances, students can elect or are encouraged to elect the Physics 125/126 sequence. Some advisors will advise all students who have had calculus to elect Physics 140/240. Physics 140/240 can be elected by all students who have had calculus, but it should be elected only by students who enjoy solving difficult problems and who think that they will be good at it.

This course will provide a broad overview of the most current physical picture of the biography of the Universe: how it began, how its contents formed and developed, and how we project it will evolve into the far-distant future. The story will take us from the seething cauldron of the Big Bang, through the formation and evolution of galaxies, stars, planets, and life, to the extinguishing of stars into black holes, and their subsequent evaporation into the ever-expanding void. Along the way, we will describe aspects of quantum mechanics, general relativity, the standard model of particle physics, and thermodynamics. The course will stress physical concepts rather than mathematical derivations. Grading will be based on a mid-term exam and a short final paper.

This course is an interdisciplinary, team-taught introduction to the scientific method. It will acquaint students, particularly those who have no intention of entering a scientific field, with the basic process of investigation, which defines scientific inquiry. The course examines four major topics in science: theories of the creation of the universe, the structure of the atom, the periodic table of the elements, and plate tectonics. The science content of current news articles will be discussed in class. It employs an active classroom. There will be no laboratory per se, but we will include demonstrations and hands-on experience with relevant phenomena. There will be assessments at the beginning and end of the term, 6-8 quizzes, critiques of demonstrations, and a term paper.

Physics 140, 240, and 340 constitute a three-term sequence which examines concepts in physics fundamental to the physical sciences and engineering. This introductory sequence uses calculus, and, while it is possible to elect Physics 140 and Mathematics 115 concurrently, some students will find it more helpful to have started one of the regular mathematics sequences before electing Physics 140. The introductory sequence is primarily designed to develop a skill: the skill to solve simple problems by means of mathematics. Developing this skill requires daily practice and a sense for the meaning of statements and formulas, as well as awareness of when one understands a statement, proof, or problem solution and when one does not. Thus one learns to know what one knows in a disciplined way.

Physics 140 offers an introduction to mechanics, the physics of motion. The topics in Physics 140 include: linear motion, vectors, projectile motion, relative velocity and acceleration, Newton's laws, particle dynamics, work and energy, linear momentum, torque, angular momentum, gravitation, planetary motion, fluid statics and dynamics, simple harmonic motion, waves and sound.

Evaluation is based on performance on grades from homework, discussion section activities, three evening hourly examinations (see Time Schedule for dates and times) and a final examination.

It Is Strongly Recommended That Students Elect One Section of Physics 141 Lab Concurrently With Physics 140.

PHYSICS 160 Is Designed For Honors Students, Physics Majors, and Other Qualified Science Or Engineering Majors. Students must Elect One Section of PHYSICS 141. Students Are Expected To Know Calculus and Have a Background In High School Physics.

PHYSICS 160 is a rigorous introduction to particle mechanics and the motion of extended objects. Particular topics include vectors, one- and two dimensional motion, conservation of laws, linear and rotational dynamics, gravitation, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics.

Physics 160 is the first of two terms of an honors-level introductory course. The philosophical approach and technical methods of physics are used to unify the understanding of a wide range of observed phenomena. Examples are often taken from everyday life (e.g. in what way does the sound of a violin resemble the appearance of a soap bubble? And what conceptual similarity do these phenomena have with the global positioning system?) This is done in a manner that covers the basic material given in Physics 140.

This course emphasizes the use of visual reasoning as a complement to mathematical analysis. This first semester makes extensive use of classical mechanics in quantitative problem solving. Students should have a knowledge of basic calculus and they should also have an understanding of physical science at the level of a high school junior or senior. The course meets in a single section four times per week; there is no division between lecture and recitation. Each student is expected to participate actively.

Physics 240 continues the study of classical physics begun in Physics 140. Here the subject is electricity and magnetism. We begin with electrostatics where electric source charges are at rest and for which Coulomb's Law applies (similar but not quite identical in form to Newton's Law of Gravitation). Then we allow source charges to move, but only as steady currents initially, leading to magnetostatics (Biot-Savart Law & Ampere's Law). After that we loosen the reins and let all charges move arbitrarily, as we enter the world of electrodynamics (Faraday's Law, Lenz' Law, & Maxwell's Equations). We finish the course with a study of light, which turns out to be a bundle of self-propagating electric and magnetic fields, the properties of which result directly from Maxwell's Equations.

    It's really essential that you read this. The treatment is not as systematic as a normal textbook, but it correlates directly with the unit tests, and expresses the point of view and philosophy at which they aim.

The grading system of the Keller courses is quite different from the regular Physics 240 lecture/discussions. Your grade is based on the number of "units" you complete and scores you achieve on the exams. If you are willing to work hard, you can finish the course with whatever final grade you choose. This makes the course ideal for highly motivated students such as premeds and science majors; if you are willing to work hard, you can get an A+. Your schedule is also more flexible. If you want, you can finish the course early; if you are ahead of schedule you can skip a class and concentrate on another course. On the flip side, this is not a good choice if you are a chronic procrastinator.

PHYSICS 260 is Designed for Honors Students, Physics Majors Or Other Qualified Science Or Engineering Majors.

Goals: This course provides a rigorous introduction to electricity and magnetism. It will prepare you to go on to take other courses required for a concentration in physics. The course covers the same material as Physics 240, but involves more student participation and interaction. Topics include electric and magnetic fields and potentials, DC and AC circuits, inductance, and Maxwell's equations.

Homework: As in all physics courses, homework is very important. There will be homework assignments nearly every week, to be turned in normally at the beginning of the hour on Wednesdays. A random subset of assigned problems will be graded. Questions about the homework are welcome at any time, but time will be reserved on Thursdays to go over concepts helpful for doing it. The purpose of this course is to study the many connections between physics and music and to increase an appreciation for both. Three general areas are covered:

  1. The physics of sound and the physics of musical instruments, including the nature of air pressure waves, resonance, frequency analysis, musical scales, the physics of several classes of musical instruments, the perception of music, room acoustics, and sound reproduction;

Exams: All of the exams are entirely multiple choice. Two exams, consisting of ~25 questions each, will be given in class covering the first third and second third of the course. PHYSICS 341 is a laboratory course intended to accompany PHYSICS 340 and provide a perspective on physics as an experimental science. The experiments performed cover topics that include temperature measurement, black body radiation, optics, interference, diffraction, and the speed of light. Evaluation is based on participation and performance in the laboratory classes, and on written laboratory reports.

    his is a second course on the classical theory of electromagnetism at a level suitable for majors in the physical sciences or engineering. Familiarity with Maxwell's equations at the level of PHYSICS 240 is assumed. Other prerequisites include MATH 216 and concurrent or prior enrollment in PHYSICS 451. PHYSICS 340 is strongly recommended. The course elaborates on the theoretical content of the Maxwell theory as well as practical applications.
