"Telling It" is a community-based arts and literacy project which assesses how engaging children in the creative arts can foster growth in writing skills.

This is a wonderful opportunity for UM students to experience a collaboration of the arts and higher education seeking to help the invisible homeless children in our society. Students in "Telling It" will learn how to incorporate arts disciplines (such as storytelling, music, theater, visual art) into playshops designed to introduce and improve children's creative writing skills. The students will be collaborating later in the academic term with the local band The Rebel Girls to record the children's stories for local release.

The course is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors, preferably with a background in sociology or education and a keen interest in how the arts can reach and teach at-risk children. Attendance at all classes is required.

Students will be required to keep an analytical journal of the term and to read about the nature of arts in education, race, class, poverty, and homelessness, with a focus on the impact of these factors on childhood literacy. At the end of the academic term two essays will be handed in with the journals for a grade.

For eight to ten weeks of the term, the team will meet with a group of fifteen 7-to-10-year-olds, who will be bussed from Washtenaw County schools to the Residential College on Monday afternoons. All of these children are currently staying with their families in homeless shelters. UM students will work directly with the children, using the playshops as springboards for them to produce creative writing portfolios. As the project progresses, the team will be monitoring changes in the children's writing ability.

What do we make of administration claims that the Iraq war was needed to stop terrorism, reduce the danger of unconventional weapons, and spread democratic values? How valid are arguments by the left that the real reason for the war is global control of oil? What are the effects of the war on Iraqis themselves? On the surrounding "neighborhood"? On the U.S.? What are some possible exit strategies? What impact will our new foreign policy have on U.S. relations with other countries in the future? These and many other questions will be explored through featured speakers, panels, and debates among scholars and activists from the U of M and surrounding communities. Students will be invited to pose questions of all presenters and come to their own conclusions about the ethics and effectiveness of the "preemptive" war in Iraq. Requirements: readings, attendance at 5 out of 7 sessions; detailed notes from 5 sessions, a final 5-7 page paper on the student's own position.

In this course, students will be introduced to some traditions in German theater and to the major German theater journals. We will read German dramas together (in German) as a group and will focus on pronunciation and fluency, using speech exercises. Also, students will be introduced to the working methods of RC Deutsches Theater through theater warm-ups and theater workshops designed to improve concentration and flexibility acting. Students in this mini-course will participate in some aspect of the RC Deutsches Theater production on April 2-4, 2004.

Enrollment in this mini-course is with permission of the instructor only. Dates and class meeting times to be determined at an arranged meeting on January 9 at 3:00pm in Greene Lounge. In addition to regular meeting times, each student will also meet with the instructor outside of class for individual work on pronunciation and diction. No tests and no papers required, but attendance at sessions and at Deutsches Theater dress rehearsals and performances is mandatory. The course will end on April 5. Students in second-year German and above are encouraged to participate.

OBJECTIVES: While historical, this is especially a study of the forms of mass participation in the movement against U.S. involvement in Iraq, and especially the emergence of new forms and various changes in demographics from previous movements, the use of e-networks, etc. Forms of the movement include: Mass demonstrations, obtaining resolutions against the war from 164 U.S. city councils (in contrast to strongly pro-war federal Congress), formation of national anti-war organizations, of local organizations in communities and on campuses. Demographic issues considered are, especially, class issues related to various forms of protest and class in relationship to nationality and racial backgrounds, urban vs. suburban, etc., and variations in the demands/aims across the different anti-war activities. (Faculty sponsor has a conference paper which prospective students may read.)

STUDENT TASKS: Much library and news media research, lots of web sources, etc. Meeting every week with faculty supervisor and other student(s) to evaluate information students have uncovered and weigh its importance collectively. Students are expected to think critically about the data collected and assist in analysis and decisions at to what leads are valuable to follow up over the next week. Students would prepare posters or short conference papers for presentation at an appropriate forum. Private web research pages will be used for collaborative and archival aspects of projects.

In this course, students will study the technical skills, vocabulary and repertory of classical Javanese dance. There will be instruction in the basic ways of walking, moving the hands and the head, and working with the dance scarf for the two types of dance performed by females (putrid and alus) and the two types of dance performed by males (gagah and alus). Students will also be given instruction in how to follow the rhythms of the Javanese gamelan orchestra that accompanies the dance. In addition, students will learn about the philosophical/spiritual underpinning of Javanese dance. After the students have learned the basic movements characteristic of all Javanese classical dance, they will begin to study particular characters and dances. Near the end of the semester students will participate in a dance drama. Students will be expected to learn their parts and to attend all rehearsals and the performance. In the month prior to the concert, they will be expected to attend additional rehearsals.
