This class introduces Hinduism to students through an intensive study of this single most important scriptural text, the Bhagavad-Gita. We spend half the time going over the text-in-translation, chapter by chapter. The other half of the class time is devoted to critical issues relating to the text, i.e., history of the text, its transmission, its location within the history of Hinduism, its connections with political/cultural history, its ancient and modern interpretations. The grade is based on class participation, two papers, and two in-class examinations.

This course examines some of the conceptions and evocations of the Floating World – the ever-changing realm of love, longing, grief, and death in which we all live – in the literature and art of Edo-period Japan, approximately the 17th through 19th centuries. In particular, we will explore issues of love, duty and honor, women's indentured servitude in the so-called "pleasure quarters," and the nature of sexuality and the homoerotic in works of early-modern Japanese fiction. Authors to be read and discussed include Ihara Saikaku, Ejima Kiseki, Jippensha Ikku, Ryûtei Tanehiko and other representatives of the "new" Edo urban literature, as well as the early-20th century writers Higuchi Ichiyô and Nagai Kafû, who wrote wistfully of the demise of the licensed quarters during Japan's transition to modernity. Knowledge of Japanese is neither expected nor required. Students from a variety of disciplines and academic backgrounds are invited to attend.

The ever-changing relationships among Japan, China, Korea, and the United States can be seen through different filters, each interpretation particular to the eye of the beholder. Memories of war and peace, of idealism and heroic effort, as well as enslavement, destruction, and death. This course will use as its focal point a live theater performance titled "Forgiveness" which is to be performed in Ann Arbor on March 24, 2000. The performance features artists drawing on Chungak and Pansori traditions from Korea, Japanese Noh Theater, and Chinese Jinju (Peking Opera). It features artists from those countries as well. The class will be organized as a colloquium, meeting to discuss issues related to the performance and to the historical relations between these countries that the performance may invoke. The class will attend the performance as well as guest lectures from "Forgiveness" director Chen Shi-Zheng, and faculty experts on China, Korea, and Japan. The course will take advantage of various "Master Class" performances/seminars that will be given by the performers, and other ancillary events being created around the performance. The class will meet for 6-7 sessions in February and March (a total of 14 hours of class time). Students will have required readings, and grading will be based on class participation, and a take-home essay exam.
