1. Self-Assessment

At the University of Michigan, writing will play a critical role in your thinking and learning, beginning with your first year. In some classes, your writing will be your most important tool for demonstrating that you understand course concepts. Your ability to write prose that, at its best, is characterized by intellectual force, clarity, appropriate organization and development of ideas, effective use of evidence, cogency, and stylistic control will be crucial to your success as a student here. Because writing plays such a vital role in all academic disciplines at Michigan, your first writing course must meet your actual needs as a writer so that you can successfully make the transition to college writing.

All students entering the University should fulfill the First-Year Writing Requirement during their first year. They may do so by taking Practicum and another first-year writing course, or by taking a first-year writing course alone. After meeting with an advisor or a Writing Workshop instructor, students decide which of these alternatives is better for them on the basis of a self-assessment.

2. Writing Practicum (ECB 100-105)

Practicum students develop writing skills that will allow them to take full advantage of their experiences in Michigan courses. Far from being a remedial class, Practicum is designed to support students with limited experience writing the sorts of pieces most often assigned and valued at the University. Thus, Practicum enhances students' abilities to succeed here. Practicum offers opportunities for students to improve how they organize, develop, and support ideas, analyze complex materials, and deploy evidence in an argument. The course requires biweekly tutorial sessions with the instructor; this concentrated individual attention has proven crucial to the success of students with limited writing experience.

ECB 102. Writing Practicum.

The title of this course comes from a Nicholson Baker essay that differentiates thoughts according to size an absurd proposition. Nonetheless, I find his effort interesting and exemplary of what writers have at their disposal when they sit down to write: infinite possibility so long as they are willing. It is with this in mind that I conduct my course in writing. We read a number of relatively short essays, each of which in its own way carves out a piece of everyday life and experience to examine: for example, James Baldwin on "What It Means To Be American," Barbara Kingsolver on "Life Without Go-Go Boots," and Brent Staples on "A Black Man Ponders His Power to Alter Public Space." Students write regularly on a variety of topics drawn directly and indirectly from the readings. We do not write about the readings; rather, we write in relation to other writers. Class attendance and semi-weekly meetings are required.

This class will help you prepare for the type of thinking and writing that you will need to succeed at this university. Our first step will be to engage our thinking of critical issues by reading short non-fiction pieces. To improve your writing, you will write one-page reading responses for each article you read and four papers throughout the academic term. All of your papers will go through multiple drafts before an individual paper is finalized. To increase your ability to analyze text and to help your peers improve their written communication, you will be expected to read and comment upon early drafts of their papers. Overall, in this class you can expect to receive instruction and practice reading; discussing and analyzing information; brainstorming and generating ideas for essays and papers; defining an audience; creating a thesis and argument; drafting and revising through multiple drafts; using handbooks and editing for standard usage.

This is a course in directing your writing to academic readers, faculty in disciplines across the curriculum. We turn our attention collectively to intellectual inquiry of two kinds, both of which predominate in courses you will be taking: logical argumentation and basic research. If you master the modes of thinking and forms of reasoning that characterize these assignments, you will improve your working strategies for approaching questions and responding to them effectively. Class sessions include discussions of these strategies and their implementation, reviews of peer papers, introductions to stylistic features of good writing and reading, and oral presentations of your work. Individual conferences insure that you have the benefit of direct feedback on your papers. Course pack readings supply us with material for your general grasp of topics, understanding of the inquiry processes we are studying, and comprehension of undergraduate writing samples I have assembled.

Coming to college involves joining conversations in your classes that take place in writing as well as in speaking. When you are writing personal narratives, these conversations are called "dialogue." In academic papers, these conversations often involve other writers, your sources. How can you enter into conversation with published authors and authorities? In this class, you'll have a chance to enter into conversations with other authors and with your classmates as you write narratives, summaries, responses to readings, proposals, evaluations, comparisons, and arguments. You'll choose three pieces of writing to revise and edit into polished, finished products in which you claim some authority of your own.

ECB 300. Seminar in Peer Tutoring.

This seminar prepares you to join the Sweetland Writing Center Peer Tutoring Program where you will serve as a consultant to other undergraduates who need help with their writing. After completing ECB 300, you go on to take ECB 301 in the next Fall or Winter Term where you will be given course credit for serving as writing tutors. As part of your training, we discuss readings on the theory of composition, learn about writing in the different disciplines, examine the strengths and weaknesses in your own writing, and begin, under supervision, to practice tutoring. Course work includes three papers as well as brief reports on the tutoring experience. Registration by override only. Contact the Sweetland Writing Center.

ECB 301. Directed Peer Tutoring.

This is Peer Tutoring for credit. Open only to students who have completed ECB 300. Those who enroll for one (1) credit will tutor two hours per week, for two credits three hours per week, for three credits four hours per week. In addition, all peer tutors meet one hour per week with the instructor for a discussion section. The weekly meeting serves for planning and administering the work being carried on by the peer tutors, including OWL tutors. It is also used for further professional development, carried out through reading and writing projects. Registration by override only. Contact the Sweetland Writing Center.
