This seminar will explore the life and culture of East European Jews before the Holocaust. In our effort to build a picture of a dynamic and multi-faceted society, we will especially focus on the transition from tradition to modernity and rely on a variety of disciplines history, literature, art, film, music, anthropology, and linguistics. Requirements include several short response papers, research project, and group-led discussion.
