ECB 102. Writing Practicum.

Practicum students develop writing skills that allow them to take full advantage of their experiences in Michigan courses. Students will gain practice and experience in (1) writing as a process of drafting and revising, (2) reading and writing analytically, (3) developing a writer's voice, which includes distinguishing between their ideas and those of others, (4) studying models of writing of the kind they are expected to produce, (5) using the computer to draft and revise papers and to talk about writing, and (6) attending to grammar and mechanics. Classes meet two hours per week. Each student receives an additional half-hour of individual instruction every other week in a conference with the instructor. Many sections are taught in a computer-equipped classroom, which offers students the opportunity to use computers for research as well as writing. Practicum is not graded but does earn two course credits. Class enrollment is limited to eighteen students.

The basis of credit in this class is students' reflective tutoring of peer writers. Open only to students who have completed ECB 300. Those who enroll for one credit will tutor two hours per week; for two credits, three hours per week; for three credits, four hours per week. In addition, all peer tutors meet one hour per week with the instructor for a discussion section. The weekly meeting serves for reflecting on and administering the peer writing tutor program, including the OWL. It is also used for further professional development, carried out through reading and writing projects. Registration is by permission only. Contact the Sweetland Writing Center.
