Afroamerican and African Studies
(CAAS)
(Fall 1985)
In the event of disagreement between a student and instructor with respect
to the grade received by the student for an Afroamerican and African Studies
course the following procedure should be pursued:
- The student must contact the instructor and discuss the work upon
which the grade was based.
- If disagreement remains after such discussion, the student may bring
the matter to the attention of the Chair of the CAAS Academic Committee,
who will discuss the issue with both student and instructor, either separately
or (where possible and advisable) together.
- Where resolution of the problem is not reached through mediation of
the Chair of the CAAS Activities Committee, the matter may be brought in
written form to the attention of the CAAS Academic Committee at its most
immediate monthly meeting. The Academic Committee typically is composed
of four faculty members. In the case of grade grievances, this committee
will be augmented with two students, one chosen by the student who filed
the grievance and the second chosen by the CAAS Academic Committee. Both
student and instructor may provide whatever information is deemed necessary
to reach an equitable decision. A decision may be rendered at the initial
hearing, but in no case shall it be rendered later than one month following
the date the written grievance was filed with the Committee.
- Decisions of the CAAS Academic Committee are advisory but not necessarily
binding upon the instructor.
