Great Books Program

(25 April 1989)

  1. A grade grievance hearing committee is advisory only. A grade given by a professor may be changed only by that professor (Faculty Code B 5.01). A grade given in a class taught by a teaching assistant may be changed only by the professor supervising the course. Grievance procedures are intended to issue in a recommendation to the professor for or against change of the grade.
  2. The only reason for changing a grade is the finding that the grade has been given on some grounds other than the quality and completeness of the student's work, and attendance, and that those grounds are unfair. It is assumed that the instructor is the best judge of the quality of the student's work.
  3. A student who questions a grade should first take the matter to the instructor and attempt to settle the matter on that level if possible. If the instructor is a teaching assistant, the student and the instructor may wish to bring the matter informally to the supervising professor for discussion and resolution.
  4. If such informal consultations do not yield a resolution, the student will write a letter detailing the objections to the Director of the Great Books Program. The Director (or a designated substitute) will decide whether there is prima facie reason to proceed to a formal grievance procedure.
  5. If the Director determines there is a prima facie reason to proceed, the Director will appoint a hearing board consisting of two faculty members and one student.
  6. The hearing board may request all written work and examinations of the student, and other written evidence which may apply.
  7. The instructor may see the student's written letter detailing the objections, and may reply in writing. The student may see the instructor's reply.
  8. The hearing board will establish its own rules of procedure provided that the student and the instructor each have the choice to appear personally or not.
  9. The hearing board will report its decision in writing to the Director of the Great Books Program.
  10. Any grievance should be filed within four weeks of the end of the term for which the grade was given. The program is not obliged to consider any grievance filed after the fourth week.
