This course is intended to familiarize students with the sociological perspective. The first unit introduces the contending schools of sociological thought that have evolved to explain the sources of inequality, power, and social change in modern societies. In the second and third units of the course, these clashing perspectives are employed to understand many of the basic processes and institutional features of the United States, including the general character of social stratification, the persistence of poverty, the nature of race relations, the impact of schooling on equality, the extent and type of political democracy, and the distribution of economic resources. While focusing on the contemporary United States, comparative and historical perspectives are also utilized. Grades are based largely on three in-class exams.

This course introduces students to sociology by examining some the most important questions that sociologists have asked about social inequalities. We focus on inequalities of income and wealth, access to quality education, exposure to environmental hazards, and political power, as these are affected by class, race, and gender. We examine competing accounts of the causes and character of these inequalities, and some of the ways that sociologists try to assess the relative merits of competing theories. For the most part, we explore these relationships in the contemporary United States. However, we employ historical and comparative analysis from time to time to better understand how these relationships came to be as they are today in the U.S., and how the U.S. case differs from that of comparable countries.

This course introduces students to basic principles in sociology through the study of the social institution of education. The primary focus of the course is on the ways that educational systems both maintain and challenge social inequality. Students will discuss the ways that education differentially allocates resources based on race, class, and gender. Students will also examine the role of education as a socializing institution. Some of the questions addressed throughout the course are: What consequences does schooling have on life chances? How much do race, class, and gender affect schooling experiences? How do schools influence ideas about individuals’ roles in society? Coursework includes three exams, one project, five short reaction papers, and participation in discussion section.

Students in this section will participate in the SMART Program, the goal of which is to close the "achievement difference" between African-American students and others. Participation involves every other Saturday as well as after-school academic "coaching" and mentoring, goal-setting, esteem-building, enrichment, and career exploration activities. About 75 students from Scarlett Middle School (and some 9th graders) participate in the Academy. Mentors will work with small groups in Saturday activities and one-on-one during the week.

Students will work with the Center for Empowerment and Economic Development (CEED).
CEED is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building economic independence particularly for
historically underprivileged and discriminated peoples. Much of the work they do involves helping people
start their own businesses and become economically stable and independent. In 1998, students helped
publish a Black business directory. In Fall 1998 and Winter 1999, they worked to organize a Women's
Business Summit in Michigan to address the concerns of women business owners and provide a venue for
their voices to be heard, create a networking and support system for women in business, and create a
statewide women's business organization. Students will be expected to volunteer in two weekly two-hour
shifts: One shift will include a group meeting with the CEED director and will be coordinated with student
schedules at the beginning of the term; the other students may arrange according to their availability.

This is an interactive program that works with children between the ages of 6 and 12 who have been referred by the juvenile justice system. Students work to establish relationships with individual children along the lines of a positive role model; the mentor will work with his or her mentees on goals that are established at the beginning of the semester. Most of the children have behavior problems, learning disabilities, or personal problems that mentors may be able to help their mentees make progress in coping with.

At the Detention center students will provide structured leisure time in both educational and recreational activities and may incorporate theater activities, as well as music, dance, and/or art. Students in this section provide positive models and interactions for these youth, much like a Big Brother or Big Sister. In the past we have held debates, health and nutrition seminars, and seminars on skills for job seeking.

Western Wayne is a medium security prison for adult males and Adrian is a minimum security facility that houses adult male prisoners who are serving short sentences, or will be eligible for parole within the next 18 months. Students will organize a weekly debate about a current topic, the goal of which is to strengthen communication and educational skills of both students and inmates. No previous debate experience is necessary.
