This course provides the opportunity to become acquainted with Korea and Korean civilization through a study of the history, thought, religion, and literature. Each lecture will take the themes in Korean Civilization, with emphasis on the history and culture from pre-historic to modern times. We will consider the unique shape of Korean civilization as it has been impacted by its larger neighbors: China, in traditional times, and Japan, in the twentieth century. Along the way, we will examine literature materials illustrative of Korean elite values, popular religion and family structure. The course will consist of four parts: Korean history; thought and religion; literature; contemporary society.

Chronologically, our survey will begin with 18th-Century Choson Korea and end with the present-day South and North Korea. Through a combination of lectures and discussion of sources – historical scholarship, novels, short stories, and visual images – we will reconsider central themes and narrative strategies in existing historical scholarship on Korea. Topics to be examined are: Korea's entry into the modern world; the nature of Japanese colonial rule; Korean nationalist and socialist movements; the Korean war; and problems related to economic development.
