This course provides the opportunity to become acquainted with Korea and Korean civilization through a study of the history, thought, religion, and literature. Each lecture will take the themes in Korean Civilization, with emphasis on the history and culture from pre-historic to modern times. We will consider the unique shape of Korean civilization as it has been impacted by its larger neighbors: China, in traditional times, and Japan, in the twentieth century. Along the way, we will examine literature materials illustrative of Korean elite values, popular religion and family structure. Through a combination of lectures and discussion of sources – historical scholarship, novels, short stories, and visual images – we will reconsider central themes and narrative strategies in existing historical scholarship on Korea. Topics to be examined are: Korea's entry into the modern world; the nature of Japanese colonial rule; Korean nationalist and socialist movements; the Korean war; and problems related to economic development.
