The skill of written communication is a highly prized and invaluable tool
for your personal and professional future. The introductory composition
courses we offer are not just another set of writing courses but ones which
emphasize the direct relationship between clear writing and focused, coherent
thinking - something essential in an undergraduate curriculum as
well as in all graduate schools, professional schools, and careers. Composition
courses move toward helping you to find your own style as you write papers
of both personal and analytical natures. The emphasis on argumentation and
persuasion helps you see writing as a creative process which allows better
self-expression and provides a helpful intellectual foundation for all future
college courses which demand written analysis.
- All students entering the College are required to submit a portfolio
of writing to be evaluated by the English Composition Board. On the basis
of this evaluation, students either are placed in a Writing Practicum or
Introductory Composition class, or are exempted from the Introductory Composition
Requirement.
- Course numbers for the ECB writing practica vary from term to term.
For Fall Term, ECB 106 and 107 will be offered for entering transfer students.
In the Winter Term, 108 and 109 are offered.
Note: Not all transfer students are eligible for ECB Practica 106-109.
- English 220 (Intensive Composition) is designed to meet the needs of
junior, senior, and occasionally sophomore transfer students. Transfer students
placed in English 220 may choose to elect English 124 or 125.
- A student MUST have junior standing (at least 55 credits) and have completed
Introductory Composition before being eligible to meet the Junior/Senior
Writing Requirement. Juniors should discuss with an academic advisor how
best and when to meet the requirement. It is recommended, but not required,
that students meet the requirement in the area of concentration or special
academic interest.
- Students must modify the course by means of the normal registration
procedures. The course instructor must certify that the student has met
the requirement at the end of the term.
- Each term the English Composition Board provides a list of such approved
courses. A course approved to meet the Junior/Senior part of the Writing
Requirement one term is not necessarily approved in a subsequent term.
The Junior/Senior Writing list appears each term in the introductory pages
of the LS&A Course Guide. Updated versions are posted on the
bulletin boards outside 1419 Mason Hall. Check this location to learn about
additions or deletions or you can access an updated list through gopher.itd.umich.edu
(LS&A publications server).
Please direct any questions regarding fulfillment of the LS&A Composition
requirement to your advisor or to Student Data and Publications at POINT-
10.
