Tutoring Resources (free and/or for fee) at
the University of Michigan
College of Literature, Science, and the Arts
The listing of tutoring opportunities was prepared by polling
the various departments/programs in the College of LS&A .
We asked if a department has an undergraduate club or honor
society that provides FREE tutoring to students, the name of
the organization, its address, hours of tutoring, etc.,
as well as the specific courses for which tutoring is provided.
We also sought information on whether departments maintain
a listing of tutors who are available on a for FEE basis. If
the department did, we asked where students would find the list,
and whether the department certifies those on the list as qualified
or recommended, or did they offer the information without endorsement?
If neither of the above options were applicable, were there
resources on campus to which they refer inquiring students?
NOTE: LS&A Student Academic Affairs and the College
of LS&A does not sponsor, recommend, or assume responsibility
for any of the services listed below. The listing serves only
as a source of information.
Also note the concerns of one department: Because research
is a strong priority, grad student time should not be used for
tutoring purposes (in the eyes of the faculty). Grad students
need to use their time wisely, and not be innundated with outside
calls for assistance.
This listing, when finished, may be restricted to UM IP addresses.
Listed below are the responses to our questions.
American Culture
The program in American Culture doesn't have any formal tutoring
list.
Anthropology
Asian Languages and Cultures
The department of Asian Languages & Cultures does not
have any FREE tutoring available.
Astronomy
The Student
Astronomical Society (SAS) offers FREE tutoring during the
Fall and Winter Terms for 100-level Astronomy courses. Tutoring

Communication Studies
Comprehensive Studies Program
Program CSP provides supplemental academic instruction to
Program member and affiliates only. Individual tutorials exist
in a number of LS&A courses in which students commonly need
personal attention, such as courses in foreign language (French,
German, Spanish, 101-232), the natural sciences (introductory
biology, chemistry, and physics), Economics 101 and 102, Mathematics
105-216, as well as Accounting 271.
In CSP sections of English courses, writing skills assistance
is provided.
CSP also forms study groups at the beginning of a particular
term. Students may not join study groups in midstream.
For further information about CSP tutorial opportunities or
becoming a SCP affiliate, contact Chauncey Williams, CSP Academic
Advisor, 764-9128.
Economics
There are two ways a student can find a tutor in the Economics
department
(1) The Undergraduate Economics Office maintains a list of
tutors (majority are GSIs) who tutor for a FEE, posted on the
bulletin board outside 158 Lorch Hall and available as a handout.
Courses: Econ. 101, 102, 401, 404, and 405.
(2) The Economics department's student organization, MES (Michigan
Economic Society), tutors only to members of that organization
and they do not charge for tutoring services. The cost to join
MES is $15. Days, times, courses vary year to year.
Further information can be obtained from the Economics Undergraduate
Office, 158 Lorch Hall, 763-9242.
English Language and Literature
The English department does not offer tutoring. Students seeking
tutoring assistance are referred to the Sweetland
Writing Center.
Germanic Languages and Literatures
The department of Germanic Languages and Literatures offers
an unendorsed list of tutors/translators to anyone looking for
such services. The tutors listed are peopled affiliated with
the department and people who are not. The Germanic department
neither sponsors nor recommends tutors/translators, but rather
serves only as a source of information. It assumes no responsibility
for the services offered. A physical copy of the tutor list can
be picked up at any time outside of 3110 MLB, or an electronic
version can be reached at <http://www.lsa.umich.edu/german/gs-tutors.html>.
Furthermore, the German Club has plans to set up a tutor/mentorship
program, but that's not currently in effect.

Mathematics
The Mathematics department offers a free, walk-in tutoring
service to students in courses from Math. 105 through Math. 216
(excluding the Honors Courses) in what is called the "Math
Lab" located in B860 East Hall. This service is available
during the Fall and Winter Terms; during academic year 2002-03
its hours were

In addition, a list of tutors is maintained in the Academic
Services Office located in 2084 East Hall; copies are available
for distribution to interested students. The tutors are mostly
graduate students who indicate the courses they are prepared
to tutor as well as information on how to contact them. The fee
for this is determined by mutual agreement between the student
and the tutor with rates usually in the $10 to $20 per hour range.
Near Eastern Studies
The department of Near Eastern Studies does not maintain a
list of tutors in its office. Generally, students seeking tutoring
assistance are referred to one of the language instructors, who
generally can help someone find tutoring. Other than tutoring
offered with the class itself (office hours of GSI or Instructor),
the department does not have "free" tutoring unless
coffee hours with conversational partners counts. Coffee hours
with conversational partners are not organized through the department,
but flyers are posted about during the academic year.
Philosophy
Undergraduate students may contact the Philosophy department
(2215 Angell Hall) indicating needs in conjunction with a specific
Philosophy course. The department will send an e-mail message
to its graduate students to see if anyone is interested in tutoring
for a FEE.
The department does not provide the undergraduate's name in
any such message. The names of willing graduate students are
provided to undergraduates seeking tutoring services.
Physics
The C. Wilbur Peters Chapter of the Society
of Physics Students (SPS) holds tutoring that covers most
basic and intermediate physics courses (125-126, 140-141, 240-241,
242, etc.). Students tutor in the Fall and Winter terms. The
hours vary and are set during the first few weeks of the term.
The tutoring sessions are held in the Physics Help Room (1041
Randall Lab).
The Physics
Help Room was created to help students in Introductory Physics
classes. It is located in 1416 Randall Lab. The Help Room has
three Graduate Student Instructors who have no teaching duties
other than tutoring in the Help Room, and it also provides a
central meeting place for GSIs of Introductory Physics to hold
office hours. Services in the Physics Help Room are free to all
U-M students. So unless you want or need the undivided individual
attention of a private tutor, you may be able to have all your
questions answered without having to pay a private tutor.
Many graduate student instructors hold their office hours
in the Help Room and are available to answer questions on all
introductory labs. The Help Room is staffed (usually between
the hours of 8 and 5 in the fall and winter) with graduate students
on a full time basis who are available to answer questions on
most all undergraduate physics courses.
For FEE Tutors. Tutoring is a private arrangement between
you and the tutor. The Physics department maintains a list
those people who have told us they provide this service, but
does not specifically recommend any of the tutors listed.
The going rate for private tutoring is currently somewhere
around $12 to $20 per hour. You should check with your tutor
beforehand, and plan to pay them at the time you receive the
tutoring.
Political Science
The Computing Assistance Program (CAP) helps faculty, staff, and students access and work with ICPSR data sets. For
more information about or assistance with ICPSR data sets, phone the CAP office at 763-4582.
Psychology
Statistical consulting:
The Psychology Department has statistical consultants (link should be URL: http://www.lsa.umich.edu/psych/ugo/page.asp?id=14 ) on hand to help undergraduates in psychology courses with their statistics and data management questions, help with data entry, file management, and statistical analyses. Consulting is done in the Psychology Computing Lab, B250 East Hall during the Fall and Winter terms.
The department of Psychology has no formal or continuing tutoring list. Psi Chi (the National Honor Society in Psychology) occasionally provides tutoring.

Romance Languages and Literatures
The department of Romance Languages and Literatures maintains, on a term by term basis, "tutor lists" for French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. The lists contain the names of people whose tutoring and translating services are available on a FEE basis. The department does not endorse anyone on the list, but will (if asked) highlight the names of those who are associated with the Romance Languages Department. The department DOES NOT have volunteers offering services for FREE. While the department has undergraduate clubs, they have not been providing any tutoring services.
The lists are available through our department, either by phone (764-5344) or walk in request. The lists are also available for pick-up in the hallway outside of Room 4104 Modern Languages Building.
The Science Learning Center organizes study groups for
Chemistry, Biology and Physics students.
Slavic Languages and Literatures
Slavic Languages and Literatures has a printed list of tutors and translators posted on the bulletin board outside theÊ office (3040 Modern Languages Building). Those on the list who are affiliated with the department are asterisked.
When students or members of the public call (764-5355), they areÊ given the names and numbers of the listed tutors. The department does not act as a broker, nor as a courier - callers make their own arrangements.
Note: The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures assumes no responsibility for the reliability and services of those listed as translator.Ê Serving only as a source of information, the Department neither sponsors nor recommends individual tutors/translators.
Translation Services: The department provides notarization of translations exclusively to University of Michigan Faculty and StaffÊ in matters pertaining to University of Michigan business.Ê The translation is printed on department letterhead with a verification statement and signature of a department employee. There is a notary fee of $2.00 for each notary seal.
Sociology
The department of Sociology has no formal tutor system in
our department. When a student is in great need, they may contact
the Sociology undergraduate office. The undergraduate student
services office will then contact Sociology graduate students
to see if any of them would be willing to serve as a tutor on
a fee/hr basis.

Sweetland Writing Center
Sweetland Writing Center 1139 Angell Hall 764-0429
Writing Workshop, Peer Tutoring, and OWL (Online Writing and Learning) are free services offered by the Sweetland Writing Center (SWC) to help writers become more confident, skilled, and knowledgeable about writing and the subjects they write about.
The Multi-Literacy Center is another free service available to assist students in developing the multiple literacies necessary to be effective communicators in a digital age using digital text such as webpages, PowerPoint presentations, and Flash movies.
Select any underlined link for hours of operation and more information.
Writing Workshop offers free, half-hour consultations to undergraduates who wish to work on their writing in a one-on-one setting. Sweetland instructors supplement formal writing instruction by working with students to understand assignments, develop ideas, support a thesis, revise at the paragraph and sentence level, cite sources, as well as in other areas important to writing well. Writing Workshop services are offered through appointments or on a walk-in basis. To schedule an appointment, call 764-0429.
Peer Tutors are available for one-on-one writing conferences on a walk-in basis. Because students often feel more comfortable talking about their writing with peers rather than with faculty in the Writing Workshop, many prefer to visit the peer tutors who have been trained in tutoring writing and collaborative learning by completing the Peer Tutor Program.
Online Writing and Learning (OWL) is a web service also offered by the peer tutors. Tutors review and respond with comments and suggestions for improvement within 48 hours to writing submitted online by students.
The Multi-Literacy Center offers one-on-one appointments to support students working on digital projects involving the interrelationship of words and media elements such as webpages, PowerPoint presentations, and Flash movies.
