The Ted Salter Collection

Ted Salter could be called a renaissance man. A talented commercial artist, Ted, and his wife Eileen, moved from England in 1950 and lived in Los Angeles for nearly fifty years where he worked in the entertainment industry. Throughout the 1960s, he was a frequent guest on television shows, most notably The Steve Allen Show, where he demonstrated his Back Painting act. Additionally, he was an amateur filmmaker, puppet master, magician, and master caricaturist and contributed hundreds of caricatures to the Magic Castle. A book containing much of his work was published in 1988.
Ted began his lifelong hobby of collecting movies as a child, purchasing his first film at age seven and rigging a makeshift projector to view it. Years later, his collection grew and he enjoyed turning his basement into a home theater and would invite friends to view movies once a month. His collection eventually grew to include hundreds of feature films, television programs, animated shorts and miscellaneous travel and documentary featurettes. It captures his spirit and love of life and reflects his good taste as well as his keen sense of humor.
Ted passed away in June, 2001. Eileen Salter presented his sizable collection of films to the Program in Film and Video. It is her wish that Ted’s love of film will be made available to future generations so that they can share the magic of the cinema that Ted loved so much.
